Oprah for President in '08. Why? Why not?

I have seen the idea floated a few times in some interesting places, but also on threads here.

I think she would get the vote out in a way it has never been gotten out before. It would also throw all the pollster's margins of error way out of whack (which might be worth it, all by itself).

Why do you think she should be or could be elected President?

Oprah is too good of a person to become the President.

She will be told what to say and how to react, like all of the previous persidents. After 4 years, she will look 10 years older.

A president is only a puppet.

well we see she has a great way of using money - to help those who need it. She is people smart and really listens to people. And she wants to improve life not just maintain the status quo

While she might get the women's vote there are a lot of people who don't like her (sort of in the way they don't like anyone successful and who doesn't fit the mold. Do-gooders often get put down by others. Women who are too successful don't go over too well with an aweful lot of people. And I doubt she would get the big business votes.

She has said on her show very clearly she would never run for office

I'm just a Brit looking in. I love Oprah. Do you think a black person could become president any time soon? I thought Jesse Jackson might have pulled off the nomination some years back - but, alas, no!

Sure, why not? Would her opponents be able to dig up any dirt on her? I think even Oprah's negative's far outweigh any other candidate's positive's.

Why not... we can't do much worse than the president we have now.

I'm fairly convinced that we desperately need a non-politician for president - soon!

Does anyone REALLY think that anyone who becomes President is has not compromised several things to get there?

Wouldn't that be a breath of fresh air?

Well for one thing she has stated she definatley does not want the job. As far as a black person becoming president I think that is highly likely. For one thing Collin Powell would be great as president he seems to have a level head and he is one of the few that stood up to Bush and then resigned. Jesse Jackson would not make it as he has too many enemies in positions of financial power.

I'm with you on this one Ratman. Oprah is her own person - honest, self sacrificing, truthful and has self integrity. She would be a square peg among all of the rest of the round peg politicians.

Though I could see her and her friend Gayle whoop some asses!

Politics is a dirty world. She wouldn't lower herself to that level.
