Who Has Back Pain?

Funny you should ask. On Monday I wrenched my back pretty bad because I had my body in poor alignment when I tried to lift something and the pain was excrutiating. Fortunately, from past experience, I knew that inversion of the body works wonders. That day I went to K-Mart and bought an inversion table for $99, a great price. As of Thursday I have had some stiffness but no more pain at all. I use the board several times a day in addition to taking Aleve and icing the area. This solution isn't for everyone, but it sure works for me.

I do since my teen years because of a shorter leg due to a childhood illness. I use pain killers, heat, cold, and sometimes a TENS unit.

I've had really bad bouts with lower back pain and sciatica. One bout knocked me flat out for 3 solid weeks of excruciating pain. I had physiotherapy with TENS, took painkillers (codeine and naprosyn), learned some stretching exercises, alternated ice packs and hot packs on the affected area, packed a pillow behind my back and between my knees when I slept, and most importantly, invested in good shoes (to wear inside and outside - I rarely go barefoot anymore) and a good mattress.

Any time I feel something out of whack - even a little bit - I start taking steps to get it under control as soon as possible. It's so much easier to take care of a back issue at the first signs of trouble than it is to allow the pain to get out of control and subsequently having to do so much more to get back on my feet again. I simply can't afford to ignore the first signs of trouble.

Gumby, I have degenerative disc disease and have lost perhaps 2 or more inches in my height in the last 15 yrs. I live with back pain and take naprosin when it gets bad.

One thing that really helps, besides prescribed back exercises is a good night's sleep on an air mattress. It's the best!

I've been wondering about those air mattresses and how they compare to water beds.

    Have you tried both?

Yes, Lee. I've tried both and I MUCH prefer a good air mattress. It's like sleeping on a cloud. You just need to be sure and put a quilt or something insulating over it during the colder months so you don't freeze from the cold air in it. :)

I have 2 compressed lumbar disks. Major pain sometimes. Also sciatica.

I do the ice, elevation, advil (naproxin) when it acts up. I sleep with a pillow under or between my legs. I go horizontal when I have a major flare.

The best long-term solution for that I've found has been accupuncture. The first time I tried it, it was because my ortho sturgen wanted to use long needles and inject me with steroids. At that moment I decided to try accupuncture. I got lucky and found a person who worked well with my body - and I was pain-free for 9 months after 1 session!

Thanks Brenda for that info on acupuncture. I'll pass that on to my daughter. I believe she was thinking of trying that out.

I trapped a nerve in the middle of my back 7 years ago. That was agony. I got my muscles so tense with trying to stop the pain that it affected my breathing and when I decided it was time to go see the doc, she had to put me on diazepam to relax all my muscles besides very strong anti inflammatories.

I've never really recovered, I think I just keep shifting my spinal alignment every time I start getting pain again. Someone suggested I should see an osteopath but I can't afford so it would depend on whether my doc thinks its worth referring me to one.

    Thanks Frannie

I used to have sciatica problems I used reflexology on it and except for when I was pregnant I could always get rid of the pain in about 5 minutes

I also used reflexology for monthly cramps and same result - 5 minutes and they were gone
