This Volume sets forth, what its author has been preaching for over forty years, that the "Times of the Gentiles" chronologically ended in the fall of A.D. 1914. The expression, "Times of the Gentiles," in Bible usage signifies the years, or period of time, in which the Gentile nations of the world were to be permitted to have control, following the taking away of the typical kingdom from natural Israel, and filling the hiatus between that event and the establishment of God's Kingdom in the hands of Messiah-- "whose right it is."

    Ezekiel 21:27

We could not, of course, know in 1889, whether the date 1914, so clearly marked in the Bible as the end of the Gentile lease of power or permission to rule the world, would mean that they would be fully out of power at that time, or whether, their lease expiring, their eviction would begin. The latter we perceive to be the Lord's program; and promptly in August, 1914, the Gentile kingdoms referred to in the prophecy began the present great struggle, which, according to the Bible, will culminate in the complete overthrow of all human government, opening the way for the full establishment of the Kingdom of God's dear Son.

The author acknowledges that in this book he presents the thought that the Lord's saints might expect to be with Him in glory at the ending of the Gentile Times. This was a natural mistake to fall into, but the Lord overruled it for the blessing of His people. The thought that the Church would all be gathered to glory before October, 1914, certainly did have a very stimulating and sanctifying effect upon thousands, all of whom accordingly can praise the Lord--even for the mistake. Many, indeed, can express themselves as being thankful to the Lord that the culmination of the Church's hopes was not reached at the time we expected; and that we, as the Lord's people, have further [Bv] opportunities of perfecting holiness and of being participators with our Master in the further presentation of His Message to His people.

Our mistake was evidently not in respect to the ending of the Times of the Gentiles; we drew a false conclusion, however, not authorized by the Word of the Lord. We saw in the Bible certain parallels between the Jewish Age and the Gospel Age. We should have noted that these parallels follow the nominal systems to destruction in both cases, and do not indicate the time of the glorification of the New Creation. This explanation will help the reader as he studies "THE TIME IS AT HAND." We have no doubt that the great blessings which have come to many of us in the past will continue to go through the Volume to thousands of others. So with it go the prayers of the author, .... Watchtower February 1881 p.188

If we were following a man undoubtedly it would be different

with us; undoubtedly one human idea would contradict another

and that which was light one or two or six years ago would be

regarded as darkness now: But with God there is no

    variableness, neither shadow of turning, and so it is with truth;

any knowledge or light coming from God must be like its

author. A new view of truth never can contradict a former truth.

"New light" never extinguishes older "light," but adds to it. If

you were lighting up a building containing seven gas jets you

would not extinguish one every time you lighted another, but

would add one light to another and they would be in harmony

and thus give increase of light: So is it with the light of truth; the

true increase is by adding to, not by substituting one for another.

Would the Bible Students agree with this Watchtower...

Yep, we sure do, unfortunately, the JW's do not! RR

If we were following a man undoubtedly it would be different

Then are you not just "following a man"?

Nope, I respect the man, he is my Pastor. But in the end I follow Jesus.

Why does what JW's do or do not absolve the Bible Students of Russells own words concerning "New Light and Old."

This was a natural mistake to fall into, but the Lord overruled it for the blessing of His people.

And yet what he was speaking about was "NEW LIGHT"

never extinguishes older "light," but adds to it.

He was talking in absolutes when he wrote these things. Not a natural mistake.

So, RR, could you tell me more about the Catholic priest's biography of Russell? Sounds quite interesting.

But in the end I follow Jesus.

Was not Russell also following Jesus when he wrote the Study in the Scriptures? He has condemed himself when he wrote that Watchtower in 1881. He himself did not live up to his own standards regarding "NEW and OLD light". Would the Lord Jesus, the son of God, use such an instrument to declare "NEW LIGHT" and be so wrong. It is no different with the subsequent WTS organization who got "NEW LIGHT" as wrong as Russell. What is the difference.

Remember, God always uses imperfect humans to do his work, look at the prophets, Jesus Apostles were imperfect, arguing, Peter denied him, etc.

I would be interested to see even one example of a prophet who claimed to be of God teach and prophesize a false teaching or false prophecy and was allowed to continue to with the false words much less be allowed to live. The dubs like to say ' the apostles had false expectations', did they go out in public and teach these false expectations or even voice them as being from God? Or did they simply ask the Lord Jesus a question in private?

The false teachings and prophecies of Russell or any other antichrist are not simple human mistakes, true prophets from God were not capable of speaking falsehoods from God. Hence the name false prophet fits Russell and jw's perfectly.

The Pastor's message of hope, so different from that of the Christian denominations of his day, attracted critics who, when unable to counter his Scriptural arguments, resorted to maligning his character. Such attacks still continue even though few today embrace his original message in its purity.

Yes, what a message of hope this charlatan brought to the world.
