What song best epitomizes what keeps you going

I know a lot of song threads have been posted but I am interested in WHAT and WHY a particular song moves you to keep going when you have lost so much.

If possible find the lyrics to the song and post them along with your WHAT SONG and WHY it was so important

As a kid I had an old 78 record player that I had to wind up to play (I did say old. right?) There was one old record that had a song by Ed Ames 'The Impossible Dream" I was in foster care and had no contact with my family. My foster mother acted more like a jailer (no phone calls, dropped off and picked up at school, no friends from school, no after school activities, etc)

This one song kept me going for 3 very long years (13 - 16). The words felt so true to what I felt inside. And to this day the song and the lyrics fit who I am and what I believe.

Yesterday while I was waiting for the bus to come home a lady sat beside me and we chatted about disabilities and how important it is to stay positive and do all you can to have a life you feel good about in spite of the problems we are faced with. I sat there with my wheelchair and she spoke of needing a cane soon and has all ready got eyeglasses and a hearing aid. Glasses are pretty common and most people think nothing of them but I sure couldn't do very well without them. They are an aid to better living. People resist hearing aids but the principle is the same. So is the cane and the wheelchair or any other device you need to continue living well.

So while this song helped my as a child the lesson is still there for me:

    • to keep on dreaming of better things and better times.
    • to keep on living well when I have lost so much
    • to find new things to challenge me
    • to know I did the best I could from what was handed to me

    "The Impossible Dream"
from MAN OF LA MANCHA (1972)
music by Mitch Leigh and lyrics by Joe Darion

Click here "The Impossible Dream" (a .MP3 file courtesy MGM).

    To dream the impossible dream
    To fight the unbeatable foe
    To bear with unbearable sorrow
To run where the brave dare not go

    To right the unrightable wrong
To love pure and chaste from afar
To try when your arms are too weary
    To reach the unreachable star

    This is my quest
    To follow that star
    No matter how hopeless
    No matter how far

    To fight for the right
    Without question or pause
To be willing to march into Hell
    For a heavenly cause

And I know if I'll only be true
    To this glorious quest
That my heart will lie peaceful and calm
When I'm laid to my rest

And the world will be better for this
That one man, scorned and covered with scars
Still strove with his last ounce of courage
    To reach the unreachable star

    Dear Lady Lee,

    "You'll Never Walk Alone"

I don't have the sheet music at hand, but I do remember:

"When you walk through the night, hold your head up high, and don't be afraid of the dark...At the end of a storm is a golden sky, and the sweet mellow song of a lark...Walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart...and you'll never walk alone."

Mostly correct I believe---the moment I fixed on your question, this song title came to mind. Go with the first impression, right? Thanx for the good work you do here, Lady Lee.

This song by Peter Case helped me when I was leaving the org, and a few times since then. It's kind of saying to me that, whatever situation I am in, there's always a way out. It's up to me to find the way, and follow it. I'd never heard it until I came to Trevs, and it's one of my favourite songs now, I was listening to it just now.

    Beyond The Blues

The old man on the corner, is playin' my life

He's playin' guitar with a rusty old knife

Each line that he sings rhymes with the truth

And the promise of somethin' beyond the blues

    Beyond the blues

Now you and me darlin' took the long way around

Across the wide - open country, past the heart - attack town

We hit the fork in the road where we all have to choose

Between the darkness and light beyond the blues

    Beyomd the blues

Beyond the shadows and the rain

Beyond the darkness, beyond the pain

when you know in your heart there's a way out but through

Take a walk with me darlin' beyond the blues

That old man on the corner, he's been gone for years

And his guitar and his knife are all rusted with tears

But there's a song that he gave us that we'll never have to lose

About another life waitin' beyond the blues

Beyond the blues, beyond the shadows and rain

Beyond the darkness, beyond the pain

When you know in your heart there's a way out but through

Take a walk with me darlin' beyond the blues

Beyond the blues, beyond the blues

Love is the road beyond the blues

    here are your lyrics

Rodgers & Hammerstein Lyrics - You'll Never Walk Alone Lyrics

When you walk through a storm
    Keep your chin up high
And don't be afraid of the dark.
At he end of the storm
    Is a golden sky
And the sweet silver song of a lark.

    Walk on through the wind,
    Walk on through the rain,
Tho' your dreams be tossed and blown.Walk on, walk on
    With hope in your heart
    And you'll never walk alone,
    You'll never walk alone.

Very good. What a great inspirational song to keep a person going. I remember that one well

We all need to remember there is a way out. And even if it seems the hardest thing to do, there is a way. I don't know this song but the lyrics are great

    Something very simple:

Everything in Its Right Place - Radiohead

    Everything, everything, everything, everything..
    In its right place
    In its right place
    In its right place
    Right place

Yesterday I woke up sucking a lemon
Yesterday I woke up sucking a lemon
Yesterday I woke up sucking a lemon
Yesterday I woke up sucking a lemon

    Everything, everything, everything..
    In its right place
    In its right place
    In its right place

There are two colours in my head
There are two colours in my head
What is that you try to say?
What was that you tried to say?
Tried to say.. tried to say..
To say.. to say.. to say...

    Everything, everything, everything..
    Everything in its right place

    *****************

Everything, no matter if it seems bad, no matter if it's good, is exactly as it must be. Everything is in its right place. And it could be no other way.

    "Mr. Brightside" by The Killers

Not sure why, I guess it kind of describes my current situation and for some reason that helps me cope, plus I just love The Killers.

I'm coming out of my cage
And I've been doing just fine
    Gotta gotta be down
    Because I want it all
It started out with a kiss
How did it end up like this
It was only a kiss, it was only a kiss
    Now I'm falling asleep
    And she's calling a cab
    While he's having a smoke
    And she's taking a drag
    Now they're going to bed
    And my stomach is sick
And it's all in my head
    But she's touching his-chest
Now, he takes off her dress
    Now, letting me go

And I just can't look its killing me
    And taking control
Jealousy, turning saints into the sea
    Swimming through sick lullabies
    Choking on your alibis
But it's just the price I pay
    Destiny is calling me
    Open up my eager eyes
    'Cause I'm Mr Brightside

I'm coming out of my cage
And I've been doing just fine
    Gotta gotta be down
    Because I want it all
It started out with a kiss

Daystar, I love Radiohead. They're actually my all time favorite band. There are too many of their songs to list that have helped me out in dark times. Probably my favorite is "Let Down".

    Transport, motorways and tramlines,
    starting and then stopping,
    taking off and landing,
    the emptiest of feelings,
disappointed people, clinging on to bottles,
and when it comes it's so, so, disappointing.

    Let down and hanging around,
crushed like a bug in the ground.
    Let down and hanging around.

    Shell smashed, juices flowing
    wings twitch, legs are going,
    don't get sentimental,
    it always ends up drivel.
One day, I am gonna grow wings,
    a chemical reaction,
    hysterical and useless
    hysterical and

    let down and hanging around,
crushed like a bug in the ground.
    Let down and hanging around.

    Let down,
    Let down,
    Let down.

You know, you know where you are with,
you know where you are with,
    floor collapsing, falling, bouncing back
and one day, I am gonna grow wings,
a chemical reaction, [You know where you are,]
hysterical and useless [you know where you are,]
hysterical and [you know where you are,]

    let down and hanging around,
crushed like a bug in the ground.
    Let down and hanging around.

Sorry for the Ultra long post

This song was popular about the time I had decided never to go back to the JW's. It is about not letting anyone keep control of your life, because you're not going to live forever and you've got to grab hold of life NOW!

    BON JOVI :

    "It's My Life"This ain't a song for the broken-hearted
No silent prayer for the faith-departed
I ain't gonna be just a face in the crowd
    You're gonna hear my voice
When I shout it out loud

    [Chorus:]
    It's my life
    It's now or never
    I ain't gonna live forever
I just want to live while I'm alive
    (It's my life)
My heart is like an open highway
    Like Frankie said
    I did it my way
I just wanna live while I'm alive
    It's my life

This is for the ones who stood their ground
For Tommy and Gina who never backed down
Tomorrow's getting harder make no mistake
    Luck ain't even lucky
Got to make your own breaks

    [Chorus:]
    It's my life
    And it's now or never
    I ain't gonna live forever
I just want to live while I'm alive
    (It's my life)
My heart is like an open highway
    Like Frankie said
    I did it my way
I just want to live while I'm alive
    'Cause it's my life

Better stand tall when they're calling you out
Don't bend, don't break, baby, don't back down

    [Chorus:]
    It's my life
    And it's now or never
'Cause I ain't gonna live forever
I just want to live while I'm alive
    (It's my life)
My heart is like an open highway
    Like Frankie said
    I did it my way
I just want to live while I'm alive

    [Chorus:]
    It's my life
    And it's now or never
'Cause I ain't gonna live forever
I just want to live while I'm alive
    (It's my life)
My heart is like an open highway
    Like Frankie said
    I did it my way
I just want to live while I'm alive
    'Cause it's my life!

There's a few songs that have helped me. Three Triumph songs come to mind: "Magic Power", "Fight The Good Fight", and "Hold On".

However, this song got me through some of the hardest times in my life ever since I bought the CD. Actually, the CD as a whole has some life-motivating songs, but this one probably tops it all:

    =====================

    All Comes Down - Cinderella

    Everybody thinks it's so easy
    Everybody thinks it's so fine
But everytime I get a little closer to the top
I find myself at the end of the line

You take a slow ride up
    And a fast one down
Nothin's gonna stop you spinnin' round and round and round

    Everybody's talkin' at me
    But nothin's soundin' right
They say my future's lookin' brighter
But I don't see no light
I got a bottle of hurricane
It gets me high as a kite
    Now the rain's pissin' down
And the storm is in sight
When the shit hits the fan
You gotta stick to the fight

Everybody says the world owes me
    Everybody wants a free ride
Well let me tell ya mister
If you never raise a blister
Then you might as well have laid down and died

Cause you ain't gettin' out what you don't put in
You're never gonna make it if your head is in a spin

    Everybody's talkin' at me
    But nothin's soundin' right
They say my future's lookin' brighter
But I don't see no light
I got a bottle of hurricane
It gets me high as a kite
    Now the rain's pissin' down
And the storm is in sight
When the shit hits the fan
You gotta stick to the fight

Can you feel the heat, yea
    Comin' down on you
    When it all comes down
When it all comes down watcha gonna do
Feel it comin' down on you now
    When it all comes down
    When it all comes down
    When it all comes down
    When it all comes down

    Ooo, yea
    When it all comes down
Can ya feel it, feel it, feel it comin' down on you, yea
Can ya stick to the fight when the heat's comin' down on you
    When it all comes down
    Ah, take me
    When it all comes down
When it all comes down, yea

  • Good Girl or Bad Girl?
    Good Girl or Bad Girl?

I have a couple. Music speaks to me so much. It is definitely one of my biggest coping mechanisms...

This is one that plays on the radio a lot right now. As I'm getting ready for work in the morning, and I hear it, I can't help but wonder if Tracy Chapman was a JW. I know she wasn't, but well, here are the words:

    Tracy Chapman Change Lyrics

If you knew that you would die today
If you saw the face of God and love
    Would you change?
    Would you change?

If you knew that love can't break your heart
When you're down so low you cannot fall
Would you change would you change?

How bad how good does it need to get?
How many losses how much regret?
    What chain reaction
    What cause and effect
    Makes you turn around
    Makes you try to explain
    Makes you forgive and forget
    Makes you change
    Makes you change

If you knew that you couldn't be alone
    Knowing right being wrong
    Would you change?
    Would you change?
If you knew that you would find a truth
That brings a pain that can't be soothed
Would you change would you change?

How bad how good does it need to get?
How many losses how much regret?
    What chain reaction
    What cause and effect
    Makes you turn around
    Makes you try to explain
    Makes you forgive and forget
    Makes you change
    Makes you change

Are you so upright you can't be bent
    if it comes to blows
Are you so sure you won't be crawling
If not for the good why risk falling
    Why risk falling

If everything you think you know
    Makes your life unbearable
    Would you change?
    Would you change?
If you'd broken every rule and vow
And hard times come to bring you down
    Would you change?
    Would you change?

If you knew that you would die today
If you saw the face of God and love
    Would you change?
    Would you change?

Why this song resonates with me: It hasn't been the easiest decision to walk away from my entire way of life, but it's been the best choice, the choice that has saved my life.

PS Daystar, I'm listening to Kid A right now. So when you posted your song choice, I went back to that track. It's a VERY GOOD ONE.

Here's my other song choice, I can't explain why it touches me, it just does. I have a very emotional reaction to it, probably because I grew up with it...

    RAINBOW CONNECTION
    Kermit the Frog

    Why are there so many
    Songs about rainbows
And what's on the other side
    Rainbow's are visions
    They're only illusions
And rainbows have nothing to hide
So we've been told and some choose to
    Believe it
But I know they're wrong wait and see

    Someday we'll find it
    The Rainbow Connection
The lovers, the dreamers and me

    Who said that every wish
    Would be heard and answered
When wished on the morning star
    Somebody thought of that
    And someone believed it
And look what it's done so far
    What's so amazing
    That keeps us star gazing
What so we think we might see

    Someday we'll find it
    That Rainbow Connection
The lovers the dreamers and me

    Have you been half asleep
    And have you heard voices
I've heard them calling my name
Are these the sweet sounds that called
    The young sailors
I think they're one and the same
I've heard it too many times to ignore it
There's something that I'm supposed to be

    Someday we'll find it
    The Rainbow Connection
The lovers, the dreamers and me
