Yes, and God sped up the decay of Earth's radioactive elements to make them appear older than they are, too. He also caused 200,000 years worth of snow deposits in the Greenland Glaciers to happen overnight, We do have the preserved fossilized footprints of dinosaurs, so we do know they walked on the Earth. Everything points to a developement of life long ago, and several extinction events which almost destroyed all life. We are the product of the last extinction event that wiped out the dinosaurs.

    >>Shouldn't the WTS have more faith in the Bible and BELIEVE AND TEACH that God DID CREATE THE WORLD IN SIX LITERAL DAYS?

I've wondered about this, too. The fact that science and history and common sense contradict the idea shouldn't be a problem for the Watchtower, given that most of their other doctrines run afoul of those as well. They seem like perfect candidates for young-earth creationism.

Iow: the WT is aiming at optimal differentiation, or being different from as many other stances as possible while sounding potentially "reasonable" to the average American audience which is used to fundamentalism. Good marketing.

If I have to serve a god who gives us such stupid tests of our faith, I would rather fail.

If I have to find the right religion and beliefs without proper guidance from god, then
    I choose not to look.

Your posts make as much or more sense as anything from the WT magazine, but
    that's not saying much.

Have you ever heard of the "Read All instructions" test?
A teacher instructs her students to read the instructions on page one of a test and
follow them exactly. The first instruction is to complete the test in PEN. The second
is to put your name on the paper supplied for the answers. The third instruction is to
read each multiple-choice scenario or problem completely. The fourth is to read the
four answers marked A,B,C, and D then notice the checkboxes next to the answers.
The fifth instruction is to notice the example that shows an "x" in the checkbox, not a
checkmark. The last instruction is to "Make absolutely no marks on your page- turn in
the sheet with only your name on it."

The point is that students were given all that they need, but the conditions presented
would cause most to fail this test. They would just dive into the test after glancing at
the instructions. They wouldn't be able to erase. Would that be kind of the teacher? Would the god
who created us with the desire to have the answers, punish us for the continual search
for answers, instead of just accepting in faith what some book that might be from him says?

    Narkissos,

He sounds like a great character - have you been in contact with him since leaving? To be honest you have always seemed to me to be a bit 'too bright for apostasy'. Could you tell me a bit more about your intellectual journey? I guess when you started Bible studies proper it was from the point of view of a Christian believer parting company with JW theology. Is it fair to say you have grown progressively more liberal in your views of traditional Christian truth claims? Do you consider yourself Christian at all any more?

Yet it always shocks me how you seem to be able to take a hardline stance against the Witnesses like the best of them on here. Have you bought into France's stern secularism, is that why you would go along with those who would label Witnesses a "cult" and so on? And how does that square with your postmodernist leanings? Is it a case of "believe whatever you like - as long as it's not the Witnesses"? I don't get it. Just trying to understand...

Actually, God created everything five minutes ago and made it seem like everything has existed for billions of years. Unfortunately, such a statement is not falsifiable.

Well when I first read your post I was planning on responding with the "how do you know god didn't create everything 5 minutes ago" arguement but it was already taken... darn I like that one.

    But you did say:

After all, if God made it too obvious that he created everything we wouldn't have much of a choice about worshipping him, right?

I disagree with this one, didn't Adam, Eve, Satan and all the demons KNOW that he created everything. Just because they are positive that he exists doesn't mean they lost their ability to choose. I know my parents exist, but I still don't have to do everything they say. The very concept of deliberately making it hard to tell if he exists or not, simply proves how desperate some people can get to hold to their old beliefs no matter what the evidence says.

Seriously, what do you think god want's from you? Is he some kind of all powerfull toddler who just wants to play peekaboo with you?

It amazes me at the mental gymnastics some thinking people resort to because they just have to believe in a god.
