Death Count at the District Convention

In Seattle we could have rain in the morning and scorching heat in the afternoon. I know of a lot of heart attacks and such-but put a lot of old people (and they ARE getting older) in one place and statistics alone will account for some deaths. The conditions generally don't help-as the conventions are often in blazing sun or chilly weather (in our case-both), they are exhausting, long and uncomfortable. Difficult to get to water, restrooms. Too much sitting. All those things will add to the physical stress of people who are more elderly and the truly infirm. Not to mention getting them all excited thinking this is really the last assembly. . .

What about Lloyd Barry (i believe) that dropped dead while giving the talk at the DC? They just carried him out and had another stooge read the manuscript like nothing happened.!!!!

I remember a District Convention I attended about 15 or 16 years ago in Miami. It was an oven. It was on a race track. I had to leave early because I had a heat stroke as well as my daughter who was about 8 or 9 months old. I started vomiting and she did too, and had loose bowel movements. (Sorry) I've never felt anything like that before. I started feeling bad earlier but, because I felt, if I didn't stay, I was being unappreciative of the "spiritual food", stayed. At the last minute, on the last talk I couldn't take it anymore and left.

Not easy, not easy at all.

Man, oh man... this thread is freaking me out. The fact that they would just keep going like nothing happened! And not even ANNOUNCE it? Not pray? What the hell were we there for? (Oh man, I forgot... it was a pep rally to sell more books)

Whew, Wanderer... interesting thoughts. I was not aware of these actions, never really gave it much thought.

Hugs and welcome to Cindi, so glad you two were alright!

And LOL as usual at OUTLAW!!!

    Cheers!
    Baba.

Only attended one DC that was held outside. The temperature was above 100 F and they announced from the stage that it was 120 on the stage area. Many people collapsed and had to be taken away on stretchers. My young son got sick and was running a fever of 103 F when we got home. I really thought it was crazy at the time, but they acted like it was some trial of true faith or something. Yet, still the brothers were on the platform giving talks in full suits and ties. Still think it's crazy.

I remember another CA where the DO had a stroke sitting in a chair on the stage during a demonstration. No one did anything for a few minutes. They just let him babble and droop to one side. Finally, they helped him off the stage. Then he refused to go to the hospital until the day's session was over.

last year a sister collapsed during the public Talk. I thought this might be an appropraite time to offer up a spontaneous prayer on her behalf. BUT NO!!! The speaker carried on for another 35 minutes to the bitter end, whilst the paramedics were giving her oxygen and injections in the center aisle in full view of everybody.

    HB

HB - was this at a KH or at the convention.

In the convention setting I could see that perhaps the speakers could not really tell what was happening - so they continue - still disgusting but a bit more understandable - at a regular KH meeting though.?

I never knew of anyone dying at the DC, but I recall a case in Fort Worth where a little girl (about 4 yrs old) went missing. Her parent lost site of her at the beginning of lunch intermission and she was not found until after the end of the days program. It turned out she was just with some family friends from a neighboring congregation, but it could have been much worse. Again, no announcement was made as the PA system was for convention news only. Also, the parents, who were quite worried, were basically told "well you should have kept a better eye on her"

Many years ago, I was in Dortmund, Germany. A child fell down from very high stairs thru the handrail and hit the concrete floor. I later heard that the kid died. I wondered how that could have happended. It was a convention with prayers and Jehovah's blessings after all.
