One of the best ways of examining the early history of this board is to go to Simon's user account and look at his topic history.
You are essentially correct in your assessment of the early (ostensible) origins of JWD. The part of your statement that I believe is historically inaccurate was "I know Simon has decided to allow some more free thinking lately, but I really feel things are starting to get out of hand."
I think things started to go South (from a faithful Witness perspective) pretty early on, not "lately."
But your use of the phrase "free thinking" makes me believe you're being subtly sarcastic, anyways, and trying to stir things up (aka trolling) with quasi-apologist statements that you probably don't really mean. After all, you're here posting, aren't you.
