Is practicing Capoeira wrong/bad/discouraged by Jehovah's Witnesses?

    If you're a Catholic, and she's supposed to be a Jehovah's Witness, then Jehovah's name is very much involved. Both groups use Jehovah's name in their worship as so are accountable to Jehovah for how they use that name. One is not to mix true worship and false. Syncretism is forbidden in the Holy Scriptures, since Jehovah is a God exacting excusive devotion.

    When the Watchtower gives a straight ruling, it stands. Jehovah wants a united people, after all.

    If Jehovah's Witnesses are so worried about men learning about war, then why do they concern themselves with "spiritual battles", sin, and disharmony in the congregation?

    Ephesians 6:12 gives a concise answer.

    What 1 Tim 4:5 says is true, but it doesn't dismiss bodily training altogether nor does it discourage it. Martial-arts can be used for the glory of Jehovah in the following ways:

    • the increased physical fitness improves one's health and ability to perform the work of Jehovah. For example, you can do more door-to-door ministry, carry more pamphlets, and not get as tired as you once were.
    • the disclipine and perseverence necessary in martial arts can be applied to your spiritual growth, therefore making you a stronger and more durable believer. Also, at some point, you may be asked to teach newcomers teachniques they know nothing about. This can be applied to in evangelization...it improves your ability to teach!
    • the self-defense skills will help you preserve your body from harm and even help defend your congregation members from attack as well. This will help you continue item #1.
    • certain philosophies of martial arts are in-line with Bible teaching. The re-emphasis of such "good" things will only be of benefit.
    • Understanding and experience with physical combat can aid in your spiritual struggles as well.

    This is false reasoning because Jehovah can give His people the power beyond what is normal; they are His fellow-workers, after all, and do not need to be taught the dark side to overcome it. Sound thinking ability often avoids a confrontation. Preventation is better than cure, after all.

    If you're a JW, and ever had block an attack, defend yourself, spank your kids, kick a dog, rough-house/horse-play, reenacted a scene from a martial arts movie, hit an object in frustration....then guess what?

    you used a technique found in nearly all martial arts styles! And if you think spanking your kids is not a MA technique....look at a Kung-fu book and get back to me....its an open-handed strike.

    Jehovah's Witnesses don't "have to" do anything; they have free will.

    aikichristian, I'd like to add this list to yours.

    http://www.capoeiranj.com/capoeira.htm THE BENEFITS OF PRACTICING CAPOEIRA
    * Flexibility
    * Mobility
    * Rhythm
    * Power
    * Endurance
    * Development of another language
    * Gain a singing voice
    * Cardio-vascular fitness
    * Spatial awareness
    * Provides a personal creative outlet
    * Gain self-confidence
    * Foster cultural identity

    These "physical" benefits are not "spiritual" benefits, when they go against "spiritual" direction. (Let the reader use discernment.)

    These are all in harmony with bible principles. The Watchtower does have the habit of "demonizing" African culture in general.

    Cultures which don't know Jehovah are backed by the demons and Satan. It makes them demonized already.

    What do you expect when sequestered ancient white men who hate dancing, music and sports call all the shots?

    If you ever were to a JW wedding reception, and probably all of the "sequestered ancient white men (and their white/non-white companions)" have been, you'd have seen plenty of dancing. Music is very common, both in any Kingdom Hall, at wedding receptions, and elsewhere in JW culture. Sports are quite common too. The boundaries of taste are just set higher, since Jehovah's ways are higher than our own tend to be.

    It's acknowledged on the site above that Capoeira *used to* be used for fighting, but this is not what they teach or perform *today*. They have some cool videos on the home page; looks like a super workout and no one's getting hurt or, LOL, "preparing for war."

    ~Sue

    Looks can be deceiving. Jehovah reads the heart. A spiritual person looks for that too.

    So it seems that by their own admission, the Watchtower Society are fully aware of the innacuracy of using the name "Jehovah", but prefer to do it because they follow tradition set byChristendom !

    How would you like it if someone kept on calling you by the wrong name, even though they knew it was wrong?

    Exhibit 4 - God's View on these things

    Look out: perhaps there may be someone who will carry YOU off as his prey through the philosophy and empty deception according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary things of the world and not according to Christ;

    [Colossians 2:8 NWT]
    ...and thus YOU make the word of God invalid by YOUR tradition which YOU handed down. And many things similar to this YOU do."

    http://www.macgregorministries.org/jehovahs_witnesses/gods_name.html God's Name

    Was it Revealed in Scripture?

    How wonderful that our God has loved us enough to reveal His personal name to us, and let us know that we can call Him by name! How satisfying to serve the personal God of Christianity and the Bible, rather than the impersonal "Cosmic Force" of the Eastern Hinduistic religions.

    GOD REVEALS HIS NAME

    The revealing of His name was done personally by God Almighty Himself, as HE spoke to the prophet Moses. Moses was preparing to go in before Pharaoh to lead the Israelites out of Egypt. Exodus 3:13 and 14 records,

    "Then Moses said to God, "Behold I am going to the sons of Israel, and I shall say to them, "The God of your fathers has sent me to you" Now they may say to me, "What is His Name? What shall I say to them." And God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM" and He said, "Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, "I AM has sent me to you."

    Notice that in direct response to the question, "What is your name?", God said to Moses, "Thus you shall say "I AM" has sent me unto you." God first gave Moses a name he could "say" or "speak", and then He proceeded to give him another name. Read on to verse 15 of Exodus chapter three.

    "And God furthermore said to Moses, "Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, "YHWH, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob has sent me unto you."

    God ends this giving of the two names, by concluding,

    "THIS is MY NAME forever, and this is My memorial-name to all generations."

    No person apparently did say the second revealed name of God, for it is the four consonants YHWH. It has no vowels [A,E,I,O,U] which are necessary for speech. The Israelites got around this by writing "YHWH", but when reading scriptures aloud, they said "ADONAI" or "LORD", and many Bibles today put in "LORD" in all capitals to signify the translation of "YHWH". There is no evidence that any attempt to pronounce "YHWH" was ever made by the Israelites, the early church, or by Jesus Christ.

    WHAT ABOUT "JEHOVAH" ?

    Some people in recent years have used the name "JEHOVAH" in place of "YHWH". According to the Watchtower Society of Jehovah's Witnesses, this name was first recorded in 1270 A.D. more than a thousand years after the death of Christ, by a Catholic Monk, Raymundus Martini. [See Aid to Bible Understanding, pages 884, 885].

    Scholars recognize that this "patched-up" name of God invented a mere 700 years ago, with the vowels from "ADONAI" inserted between the consonants "YHWH" and then further altered with the letters, "J" and "V" is incorrect.

    The following encyclopedias consider the name "JEHOVAH" to be FALSE Merits Student Encyclopedia; Encyclopedia Americana; The Jewish Encyclopedia; Encyclopedia International The Interpreters Dictionary of the Bible; The New Catholic Encyclopedia; The Universal Jewish Encyclopedia, and many more.

    In addition to revealing His name as the "I AM" and "YHWH", God also tells us that His name is "JEALOUS" [Exodus 34:14], and " HOLY" [Isaiah 57:15].

    SALVATION IN GOD'S NAME

    The Psalmist cried out, "Save me O GOD, by thy NAME! [Psalm 54:1], and also, "Help us, O GOD of our Salvation, for the Glory of thy NAME, and deliver us and forgive our sins for Thy NAME's sake." [Psalm 79:9].

    YHWH stated in Isaiah 43:11, "There is no Savior besides ME". In Zechariah 12:10, YHWH prophesied that "they will look upon Me whom they have pierced." In Zechariah 11:12,13, YHWH revealed that HE HIMSELF would be sold for 30 pieces of silver. YHWH further promised that one day He would be King over all the earth and that His name would be the only one. [Zechariah 14:9]

    How would this come about? The Virgin Mary was told that, "Behold the Virgin shall be with Child, and shall bear a Son, and they shall call his name "Emmanuel", which translated means "GOD WITH US". [Matthew 1:23].

    Jesus, whose name means "YHWH'S SALVATION" had come! Jesus revealed to the Jews that HE was the "I AM'", taking the memorial NAME of God to all generations, and applying it to HIMSELF! (John 8:58). This truth is very evident in all translations with the exception of the New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures published by the Watchtower Society of Jehovah's Witnesses.

    In the New World Translation of the Jehovah's Witnesses, it was necessary for the Translation Committee of the Watchtower Society to drastically alter this text in John 8:58, since their polytheistic theology (belief in more than one true god) does not allow for Jesus to be Jehovah. They mistranslated "Ego Emi" into "I have been" instead of the correct, "I AM".

    In 1950 they claimed it was in the "perfect indefinite tense". There is no such tense. In 1961, they changed it to "the perfect tense indicative", which is impossible for the verb "to be". They tried again in 1969 with a footnote reading "perfect tense". All are incorrect.

    Witnesses can check out their Kingdom Interlinear Translation and find the words, "I am" under "Ego Emi" on the Greek/English side of the page. Reputable scholars agree that Jesus was here quoting Exodus 3:14, claiming to be the "I AM" or "YHWH" of the Hebrew scriptures. The J.W.'s likewise altered the text in Exodus in an attempt to prevent this revealing connection.

    After stating in no uncertain terms that He was the "I AM", Jesus also said "Unless you believe that "I AM" you shall die in your sins." [John 8:24]. Salvation had come in the Name of God! Listen to Jesus' words in John 17:11,12,

    "And I am no more in the world; and yet they themselves are in the world, and I come to Thee, Holy Father, keep them in THY NAME, the NAME WHICH THOU HAST GIVEN ME, that they may be one, even as We are. While I was with them, I was keeping them in THE NAME WHICH THOU HAST GIVEN ME".

    Why I think the martial arts issue does not make sense from the Watchtower standpoint is because Jehovah's Witnesses are not pacifists. A Witness is allowed defend themselves.

    Awake 1975 September 8 p.28 Should You Defend Yourself? “The situation may be such that the only thing a person can do is to use whatever is at hand to protect himself or others. As a result, the attacker may receive a fatal blow. From the Scriptural standpoint, the one acting in self-defense would not thereby incur bloodguilt.”

    Awake 1997 May 8 p.23 “True Christians love peace. They stay completely neutral in the world’s military, political, and ethnic conflicts. But, strictly speaking, they are not pacifists. Why? Because they welcome God’s war that will finally enforce his will on earth—a war that will settle the great issue of universal sovereignty and rid the earth of all enemies of peace once and for all.”

    If a JW can use self defence to protect themselves, then why not be allowed to train for self defence?

    No doctrine taught by Jehovah's Witnesses can be accepted as "truth" when the very leaders of their organization have already "admitted" in court, under "oath" before God and man, that their teachings are false and erroneous! No Jehovah's Witness can refute this evidence, because if they do, then they are saying that their leaders lied in court! Which again, would only expose them even more! All Jehovah's Witnesses and the organization they serve fall flat on their face here! There is no way around this testimony! Q. Back to the point now, a false prophecy was promulgated?A. I agree to that.Q. It had to be accepted by Jehovah's witnesses?
    A.
    That is correct.Q. If a member of Jehovah's witnesses took the view himself that that prophecy was wrong, and said so, would he be disfellowshipped?
    A.
    Yes, if he said so, and kept on persisting in creating trouble, because if the whole organisation believes one thing, even though it be erroneous, and somebody else starts on his own trying to put his ideas across, then there is a disunity and trouble, there cannot be harmony, there cannot be marching ...... Our purpose is to have unity. PP. 345-348

    The concept that some activities are "spiritual" and others "earthly" is a gnostic concept. The Christian scriptures, rather, taught that all we do, we do for the glory of God. That is, a Christian can do dishes and be spiritual.

    aikichristian, the plain and sad truth is that as long as your girlfriend tries to satisfy all the Jehovah's Witness dictates, she will have to give up things that she loves. First, question her devotion to an organization that does not value her as a person.

    Another prime example of the WTS writers not having half a clue. The GB seem to just rubberstamp most articles.

    Fred:

    You're a daft wee c*nt, arencha ~tousles hair~ You don't happen to write for the WTS do you?

    Wow. Even the WTBTS is more tolerant than you, Fred. They at least acknowledge that many cultural influences are non-denomic.
