Graven images is one translation of a text that was written thousands of years ago in ancient language, so I don't want to argue semantics. Besides, I don't believe in fairy tales anyway. =-) Edited because I said 'Fairy Tails' and I meant 'Fairy Tales.' Two totally different.

ok creeper i'll post it again.

You guys are confusing the term image with idol. They are not the same.

The good book doesnt say anything about not making a idol. It says not to make ANY graven image. Do you still think the ark and serpent do not violate this command?

    Graven-Carved
    Image-representation

Ark had carved or cast representations of chrerubs (ME minor deity)

Serpent- carved or cast representation of a creature in the earth or the waters beneath it.

IPSEC, I am not sure where you are gathering your information about the deuterocanon, but the Tanakh is in tact as far as I know. There are no "fragments" of the Torah. Some of the other writings may be assimilated in later, but the first five, job, the psalms and major prophets are all in line with the Torah and testimony.

    creeper,

If you look at it logically, the command not to make a graven image and the commands to make graven images (ark, and snake) show that the OT is a compilation of at least two very different traditions. One that allowed images, indeed commanded images be made and one that disallowed ANY graven image. When these different traditions were combined to make it appear as one source, you end up with contradictions like this.

    edited to add:

Does the words "ANY graven image" some how exclude graven images that might have been used for Jah worship? No ANY encompases images of demons, snakes, cows, angels, Jah, Ba'al, sparrows, ants, lizards, dandilions, cherubs, etc, etc.

I totally disagree about the snake not for worship. all of those who were commanded to look at the snake by Jah were saved? sounds a bit like worship to me.

I contest that just looking at something is a form of excessive devotion and not a form of worship . I think the commandment was about worshipping idols or graven images as if they were God or represented God . Exodus 20:4 -5 . The second part of the commandments was you must not bow down to or be induced to serve them.

Here is an excerpt from "The Ark of the Covenant and the Temple of Solomon" by Laura Knight-Jadczyk:

"One theologian wrote about the Bible:

"The Bible is an Extraordinary Book: A book which claims infallibility; which aspires to absolute authority over mind and body; which demands unconditional surrender to all its pretensions upon penalty of eternal damnation, is an extraordinary book and should, therefore, be subjected to extraordinary tests.

    "But it isn't.

"Neither Christian priests nor Jewish rabbis approve of applying to the bible the same tests by which other books are tried.

    "Why?

"Because it will help the bible? It can not be that.

"Because it might hurt the bible? We can think of no other reason.

"The Truth is that The Bible is: A Collection of Writings of Unknown Date and Authorship Rendered into English From Supposed Copies of Supposed Originals Unfortunately Lost."
