I dont think teachers having guns will keep people from killing and attacking others at school.

and I dont think teachers are any much saner than the students.

I often wonder if I had a gun when I was married, if I had gotten angry enough and upset enough to kill my exhusband in one of his drunken rampage beatings I got from him.

I think the problem will only be solved by looking at the way are children are being raised now...........how we medicate kids so they can sit all day in a classroom, how we expect so much from schooling. How the people that dont have as much money to do as the other students get left out. Its the whole system, the whole way we think and do things today.

I will start a thread about it as soon as this headache goes away.

ps I have had two relatives kill themselves with guns. I dont blame the ease at which they got the guns the problem.

It all started in San Diego

January 1979 – Brenda Spencer, 17, got a rifle for Christmas and used it to shoot into an elementary school across the street from her home in San Diego, California. Eight children and a police officer were injured, and two men lost their lives protecting the kids. When the six-hour standoff finally ended, Brenda explained with a shrug, “I don’t like Mondays.”

There are statistics that prove that in concealed gun carrying states, violent crime goes down. It acts as a deterrent to would-be criminals to know they may get shot instead of doing the shooting. Especially in cases where there are multiple victims is this the case. The gunman might have shot one or two but would have then been shot himself, saving 30 some lives. I would not limit concealed handguns to teachers, either, but to all qualified individuals.

It would have served him right if you had, and perhaps he would have seen it as a deterrent.

I agree that those are all valid problems. However, they are far too complex to solve to have any immediate impact. Concealed handguns do have an immediate impact.

I'm sorry to hear that, my condolences. That sheds some light on your viewpoint.

Here's more food for thought. Most states already issue concealed carry permits, this map shows the trend:

This may be true, I really dont have enough knowledge to comment authoritively about this.

my brother was able to find a gun in his roommates bedroom ......this is the gun he used to shoot himself. I do think if someone wants to die or kill others they will find a way. But maybe, just maybe, if he had not found the gun, his state of mind might have changed and he would have see hope for whatever was bothering him.........but this is a different problem altogether.

Americans were introduced by Charles Whitman on August 1, 1966. Until Whitman undertook his shooting spree in Austin, Texas, public space felt safe and most citizens were utterly convinced they were comfortably removed from brutality and terror. After August 1, 1966, things would never be the same.

Whitman’s story stands out for many reasons, not the least of which being that it features a co-star—the University of Texas Tower, from which he fired almost unimpeded for 96 minutes. The Tower afforded Whitman a nearly unassailable vantage point from which he could select and dispatch victims. It was as if it had been built for his purpose. In fact, in previous years Charlie had remarked offhandedly to various people that a sniper could do quite a bit of damage from the Tower.

    The Texas Tower

The Tower is big—307 feet tall. It is a shorter building than the nearby State Capitol, but it stands taller as it is built on higher ground. It opened in 1937 and by 1966, it attracted roughly 20,000 visitors a year, most of whom wanted to take in the spectacular view of Austin from the 28th floor observation deck. The first death associated with the tower came during its construction; a worker slipped and fell twelve floors in 1935. There was another accidental death in 1950. There were also suicides in 1945, 1949 and 1961. Despite these tragedies the Tower stood as a beloved

we had a cop in the place where i work today.........in the town i live in......years ago there were only a handful of people every month getting concealed weapon permits.........this cop said he now trains 20+ every week.

he said they tell people to get the guns as there is too much going on for all the cops to keep everyone safe.

Have we forgotten that ARMED UT students returned fire and got Whitman to keep his head down... with the ammo he carried up he could have held out more than 96 minutes.

The liberals have un-armed just about every one that frequents public venues. Legally armed citizens CAN defend themself's and their fellowmen from the insane or criminal element.

Use your Second Amendment rights...they were written for a reason.

Arming teachers may be a viable short term plan. But the long term plan should be to aggresively prevent individuals from getting to that state of mind. This guy did not get up this morning and decide to take out 32 people along with himself. This has been perculating for a while inside his head. We can no longer allow people to fall through the cracks, there is too heavy of a price to pay for ignoring it and pretending they do not exist. They have a nasty habit of re-appearing and long after anything can be done to prevent it.
