we had a cop in the place where i work today.........in the town i live in......years ago there were only a handful of people every month getting concealed weapon permits.........this cop said he now trains 20+ every week.

he said they tell people to get the guns as there is too much going on for all the cops to keep everyone safe.

Ain't that the truth! Cops don't have the time to keep everyone safe-gotta keep fightin' the war on drugs!

The united states must start doing a much better job at taking care of and intervening in male mental health care.

This,IMHO, is the issue. Good call BrentR!

I know that there is going to be a huge issue about gun control, once again, since this has happened.

Guns to me will only escalate the situation. This person was hell bent on killing and he had it planned, even with guns in teachers hands, it seems to me unless they stand there armed, ready to fire, it would not do much good to have a gun.

The problem stems deeper and until we address that this fear will continue to grow.

I think we need to think about solutions

Chris Rock had a comedy skit where he said buliets should be LIKE $5,000.00. Maybe let people have all the guns they want, but a $5,000 bullit will be hard to come by.

edited to add: I am a single mom, raised five kids for 20 years, no man in the house, never packed a gun and somehow we all made it. Never slept with a gun or baseball bat. Sure I woke up many nights hearing strange sounds......wondering if someone was in the house, broke down on deserted roads.....got attacked by a dog......crap like that. I fear a gun in my house would have just gotten one of us shot.

    BrotherApostate,

If more people are concealing weapons now and there are more shootings, how is that helping?

It's not the ones who are legally carrying concealed handguns who are commiting the crime- it is they who are serving as a deterrent.

If a teacher or student had a gun in this case, the gunman would have been shot after the first one or two victims were shot, saving 30 some victims from death, and many others from injury.

This person was hell bent on killing and he had it planned, even with guns in teachers hands, it seems to me unless they stand there armed, ready to fire, it would not do much good to have a gun.

That is exactly the point! If someone had a concealed weapon, they would have shot the madman and the slaughter would have been over!

assuming they had a good aim.

I am not trying to be difficult. You obviously have confidence that YOU could have handled the situation. Sometimes, victims are just that.....Victims.

So lets say we all get guns.......and then we need something more.......we all get grenades......we all get cannons.......isnt that the escalation we already see with war?

Even people that have guns legally are not even responsible enough to keep them where they wont get stolen by even children. The guns used to kill children at Jonesboro school were stolen from the boys uncles house.

If someone came through my front door right now, and I did have a gun........in the bedroom.......I could not defend myself with that gun until I made my way to the bedroom

That is the point of training, target practice, etc. No one should have a gun without the training and practice.

Again, there area lot less violent crime victims in states with higher percentages of the population who carry.

So lets say we all get guns.......and then we need something more.......we all get grenades......we all get cannons.......isnt that the escalation we already see with war?

The law only allows concealed guns, so only lawbreakers would get grenades, cannons, bombs or whatever they already do. There is a huge difference in a law abiding citizen legally purchasing a gun, and legally obtaining a concealed carry permit, and lawbreaking criminals who purchase and conceal illegally.

    It's all about intent.

Even people that have guns legally are not even responsible enough to keep them where they wont get stolen by even children. The guns used to kill children at Jonesboro school were stolen from the boys uncles house.

And anyone who legally possesses a gun is to ensure it is out of the reach of children and others who do not have training in the safe operation of them. All who fail to do so are should be and are prosecuted.

If someone came through my front door right now, and I did have a gun........in the bedroom.......I could not defend myself with that gun until I made my way to the bedroom

True. However, the most likely time for an intruder to do so is as you sleep. That is why many choose to have one under the mattress.

I am really not trying to change your mind about your having a gun.

I have found that until I really solve my daughters problem with alcohol and drug abuse.....the root of it, she will continue to use as long as it is available to her, as long as people continue to give it to her. I can make that more and more difficult. And trust me I do.

When we become more clever, educated, informed, about what triggers someone mentally to freak out like this, more ammo is not going to solve it.

How many police and how much gunpower was needed and used before the gunman fineally turned on himself? Just curious, I dont know.

Nor am I trying to change anyone's mind about having a gun. I am pointing out that if it were legal for someone like a teacher or student at the scene to carry a gun, many lives would have been saved.

Good luck. Eventually she will need to learn to have the self-discipline to do so without you.

When we become more clever, educated, informed, about what triggers someone mentally to freak out like this, more ammo is not going to solve it.

Perhaps ammo will solve it- when a person gets to this point, many of them may be incapable of rehabilitation. A bullet may be the only way to stop them.

I don't know, I'm sure we'll see fleshing out the details of that the subject in the near future.
