You should not give blood if:

1You've already given blood in the last 12 weeks (normally, you must wait 16 weeks).
2You have a chesty cough, sore throat or active cold sore.
3You're currently taking antibiotics or you have just finished a course within the last seven days.
4You've had hepatitis or jaundice in the last 12 months.
5You've had ear or body piercing or tattoos in the last 6 months.
6You've had acupuncture in the last 6 months outside the NHS (unless you can produce the approved certificate from your acupuncturist or physiotherapist).
7A member of your family (parent, brother, sister or child) has suffered with CJD (Creutzfeld-Jakob Disease).
8You've ever received human pituitary extract (which was used in some growth hormone or fertility treatments before 1985).
9You have received blood or think you may have received blood during the course of any medical treatment or procedure anywhere in the world since 1st January 1980.

That's strange. We can give blood every 8 weeks...

It's an 8 week wait between donations here and a 6 month wait after having had a tattoo.

Good for you, Crumpet. I figure if I will take a transfusion, I should be willing to donate unless there are health considerations.

Please don't........There are other ways of finding enough money to go to Dallas. Why sell pieces of your body?

My wife was disqualified from donating to the Red Cross because she was underweight. Can you imagine a woman being depressed because she was underweight? I can because I lived it.

I never heard any questions about tattoo's. I was asked when I had my last cigarette and I had to wait an extra 20 minutes before they would take my blood. Something about body temperature. My blood is very popular so I donate when the need is/may be high. Hurricane Katrina was the last time.

    Hi Crumpet,

Good for you. I've been a donor for a couple of years and I'm very proud of myself. There's a shortage of blood in the UK at the moment too. I think you'll find you can't give blood for a while due to being tattooed though.

I remember how liberating it was to become a blood donor right after I escaped the Borg. My blood type (O-) is in high demand because it is the universal donor type. However since I have antigens to a disease I never had the only way to continue donating was to get a very uncomfortable swab test every six months. Without getting into an "overshare" story after two years of that I could not deal with it anymore so I no longer donate.

This is very frustrating to me because O- is extremely needed by the blood banks. Maybe some day they will change that protocol since I am sure I am not the only one out there with this dilema.
