I have never heard of either and mo I have not looked for a support group. This is my first stab at it really. I was hoping someone knew of what kind of doc to see or even could point me in a direction. This is really wearing on me.

    chelleadam~

I have sort of the same problem, but I don't have it nearly as severe. I can sleep straight through my alarm clock (it's a really loud one). I also act like I'm awake for a while at times, even if I'm not. Sometimes when I'm dreaming very vividly, I can't tell what's real, and what's part of the dream.

I do have mild sleep apnea, but my doc said the above symptoms weren't related to it. I don't know how you manage living with a severe form of this. I know it disorients me pretty badly every now and then. I've actually never heard anyone else complain of the same problem. How long have you had it?

It has been about 13 years now. I recall having trouble when I was younger waking up. In fact I recall the opposite. I was always awake. Wide awake and would jump out of bed first nudge. Now I wake up swinging. I have even thrown punches at my kids. It is not funny at all. I wake up violent often and now they may grab my toe and wiggle it. I know when my roommate would get so hurt and upset because I would say some mean stuff to him and even friends get really ugly and even when they mean well and try to help by calling or coming by, I know they get furious and often end up staying away from me. They have no clue why I don't just get up. I often hear that "I choose" this. Or even stupid ideas that they will come by and scare me to death and after enough days of this, my body will train itself to get up. That will teach me.

I guess the fear of losing my job, home, and friends is not enough to scare me. I try not to be insulted, but truly if it were that simple...don't ya' think I would be up on time. It causes me so many problems. Truly when I do best is when someones just wakes me and sits with me a bit. Perhaps has coffee and talks with me till it is certian I am up. Maybe 10 minutes. Sometimes less. My roommate used to actually after I stopped swinging take my arms and feet and rub them to get them to have circulation. I would wake up faster when he would come in and do that. but as with anything this gets old, it is not his job, I should be resposible for my own actions and well....you know, I just need to wake up.

    Hey Sparkplug......

Here is my sleep disorder: I can fall asleep in an instant but wake 4 to 5 times a night, getting up, taking the dogs out, going to the bathroom, getting a drink of water, smoking a cig, etc. Today I woke up for the last time at 3:45, tossing until 4:30 looking forward to my first cup of coffee. By 10:00 am I wanted to go back to bed.

This has gone on for years. If I stay up past midnight, I can sleep until 8:00 am with short interruptions such as the dogs and or cat getting me up in between.

So for as long as I can remember I have never had more than 3 or 4 hours straight sleep. YAWWWWN!

    R.

I know this is horrible, but that sounds like heaven to me. I know you have to be so tired. But I truly wish I had the problem in the other direction. At least I am not missing life all the time and perhaps get more accomplished. But being tired by 10:30 has to suck. I know it takes me until a good 10:30 or 11 to be fully awake. That sucks too.

Sparkplug, I do not use the tone feature since that I am totally deaf, the tone feature is designed for hard of hearing individuals.

I had similar problem at one stage and basically had to change my diet one side effect was blood pressure which accounted for ringing sound in ears. But when I'm talking about blood pressure I mean blood pressure that oscillate from low to high. When you go to sleep it falls really low and during the day can go high. Do you need a strong coffee to wake up fully in the morning?

Yes, sleep disorder can lead to health problems. I'd suggest strongly talk to a doctor about it. He can suggest simple things that can help. Or he can refer you to a sleep center, and they can monitor your REM sleep to see if there is any major problems. Or simply google it and get a good education. (web md)

    Spark,

I've ever heard of this before. After doing some searching on Google, this was the closest description I found to what you describe:

    Delayed Circadian Rhythm Disorder

Delayed Circadian Rhythm Disorder (DCR) means your body clock is running slower than a normal circadian rhythm (24-hour period). Your body doesn't 'wake up' until later in the morning or day. You may have difficulty getting started in the morning, you may feel a bit groggy or down during part of the day, and you may experience a second wind later in the evening. Those with DCR are often referred to as night owls, and find it easier to stay up late at night. Although some DCR sufferers have little trouble falling asleep, almost all have difficulty getting up or getting started in the morning.

    DCR Symptoms

You may experience one or more of the following symptoms:

    • Difficulty falling and staying asleep, and or late night insomnia.
    • A general lack of energy in the morning.
    • An increase of energy/mood in the evening or late at night.
    • Difficulty concentrating, being alert, or accomplishing tasks
    • Some DCR sufferers oversleep and have trouble getting up

    How DCR affects you

    • Because your daily cycle, or circadian rhythm is running slow, your pineal gland releases the nighttime hormone melatonin too late, often causing you to fall asleep later (Some DCR sufferers tend to oversleep). When you need to get up, your body clock may think it is still midnight and is still producing the nighttime hormones. This is why it may take several hours to feel active and energetic. And because you don't receive the proper amount or type of sleep, your energy, alertness and ability to function may also be diminished.

    Treatment Recommendations for DCR

    • BRITEWAVEâ„¢ light therapy is the most effective treatment for Delayed Circadian Rhythm Disorders. You should use the light in the morning. However, timing is very important, and you may need to use a 'shifting' schedule for the first few days. Refer to the treatment schedule below to know when to use the light.
    • Dawn Simulation has also been clinically proven in sleep labs and universities to help treat DCR. Dawn simulation helps you maintain a consistent circadian rhythm by sending a properly timed signal of light through the retina of the eye to the brain's Suprachaismatic nucleus, or body clock in the hypothalamus. The light signal slowly increases in intensity, just like a morning sunrise, providing exactly the right stimulus of light to reset the body clock while not being too bright to cause premature awakening. Dawn simulation is effective for treating mild Delayed Circadian Rhythm Disorders, and improves the effectiveness of treating moderate to severe disorders when combined with bright light in the morning

However, it sounds liike the "treatment" is for you to buy their product. Also sounds very much like quackery, who knows?

Maybe give a shot at getting some more sunshine during the day, try that for a week or two and see if it helps.

    Better yet, see another doctor.

    Best Wishes,

    BA
