Apologies if I seemed to "label" the participants in this discussion. That was not my intention. I agree with you on the importance of imagination. Especially about sex.

I agree that government will evolve beyond recognition. However, it seems that there are always hierachy and hence leaders. I think that the rulers of the future will be through corporations. We still need schools, hospitals etc and more and more these are being privatised. Is that going to be any better than governmental rulership?

You don't think that's what is happening already?
When Corporations Rule the World
Dave
We are overdue for a revolution.
Frankies,
A kindred spirit?
I would like to posit a few points
1. All governments are a protection racket
2. All governments are tyrany
3. All wars are over resources. Protection of or conquring of.
4. People are scared sheep
5. Religion is the whore of government
6. Government has evolved, but very little in the past 6000 years or so.
7. The current government of the USA is a de-evolution of the original.
Interviewer: Alright folks we have with us today Ogg, resurected first cheiftan of the first known social group of humans 120,000 years ago. Science sure is amazing isnt it. Ok well lets get our interview started. So Ogg how did you get started in the business of government.
Ogg *cockney accent*: Well you see one day I sees this pathetic sack of guts, and he's tramplin all over me ol' lady's fress ruhbarb patch tryin to dig up some groobs ah some such thing. So I says: "hey you! Pathetic sack of guts! If you dont get out of here Im goin to lump you over the head" Well me having the bigger club I decided to do just that. Pretty soon he's groveling before me askin fagivness so I decides to take his nice antelope skins instead of curbin him sumore. Afta that he started givin me a pound a two of mammoth meat to leave him alone.
Interviewer: Interesting! Sounds like a protection racket to me.
Ogg: You daft? Its a club. Racquets werent invented for thousands of years later.
Interviewer: Um right... go on.
Ogg: Well ah say it was just so easy to threaten mayhem on people I just kept doing it until finally the job just got too big. I couldnt make me rounds to get all of my booty, and was a little worried they might see that they could gang me and then the whole thing would be over.
Interviewer: What ever did you do Ogg?
Ogg: So ya, there was this big goon named Moog ee was. One day I tol him I'd give him some extra meat and a tin badge if he would help me with collections and keep the populous in line. Ee of course liked beatin peopo up and the badge was a natural chick magnet. So he took the job.
Interviewer: That wasnt the end though... was it Ogg?
Ogg: Na, well there was them others I 'ad to deal with...
Interviewer: Others?
Ogg: Ya another tribe got started up stream from us. Nasty buggas. See with ol the extra meat I was giving to my deputies as I called them, we were runnin outa game. So I says we got to go take that land. I told my men and they fell inta line. We used the rest of the men on the front lines as slingfodder.
Interviewer: My god! They agreed to that??? How did you convince them?
Ogg: Bahh! Easy! I told them that the others was pissin in the river and thats why the wata tasted like piss.
Interviewer: The water tasted like piss?
Ogg: Ya well it did after I told my tribe the others were pissin in it! You're quiet obtuse you know.
All government is a protection racket that the mafia could only dream of having. We give them money and as long as we do what we are told they dont hurt us. They keep us worried about unreal threats that they need to protect us from so that we become scared sheep.
More later on my other points if you want. Im tired now
I too think that humanity will go in this direction as it evolves. Right now, most of the world live so much in their animal parts. To keep this contained, it requires alpha entities; warlords, dictastors, govts, powerful gods, heros, powerful bombs, etc. The western (white) civilizations have entered more into the mind/mental phase of the human. While the mind is better for civilation, development of technology, and orderliness than is the animal, it nevertheless can be easily led down wrong paths. The roman catholic church and the wt society are good examples of this. The other level, which i believe is heavily involved in the development of which you speak, is the the spiritual/spirit. That is because the spirit part of us knows that all is one, from one source. It generally can see the oness of the human mass, as well as the rest of earth's life, then the earth w it's riders, the sun, solar system, milky way, the universe, and the rest.
However, this could be a long way down the stream of time, as we may need to learn many lessons yet. The growth of much higher technology would help too, i think, because it would make available more knowledge/understranding and more liesure time to explore.

Governments have already lost much of their power. In the last few years many Anarchist-minded people have been found (ironically) trying to resist the steady erosion of state regulations in order to counteract the growing power of corporations. However the trend seems to be irresistible. Democratic governments mostly work already as a moral legitimation for the public order which allows the economical forces to work. They are expected to protect the "market" (at least morally, because even police and prisons are increasingly privatised) but they can less and less modify its structure and operation. However the best protection for corporations comes from the people's continuing will to work and consume. Commercials in this respect are more effective than governmental propaganda.
If there is an "evolutionary step" ahead, it is more about stepping out of the "era of consumption" than out of the "era of governments" imho.
While there is a lot about corporatism and consumerism that i don't like, it could be that it is a vital step to a better future. In the 'old days', food was produced by independent farmers who fed themselves, and sold/traded their surplus, in order to buy the other things that they couldn't make themselves. Factories back then were a crude form of present day mega shops that produce everything. It's undeniable that present day factories have made things more abudent, cheaper and better (generally).
Farming and production used to be a hit and miss/flying by the sear of your pants affair. Today, experts give input/dictate eveything. Better efficiency and higher quality are generally the results.
Another trend is the replacement of human workers w robots and computers. In the future, more and more factories could be made up of mostly bots and puters. This would further reduce costs of things and increase abundence. If nanotech really gets going, dirt could be shovelled into one end and whatever was desired, cars, cameras or chicken could be pumped out.
Ultimately, the consumers and investors govern what the corps do/produce. They can dociley follow along the directives of commercials, or they can become more informed and educated and disciplined and force the corps to serve them, instead of vice versa. At this stage, that is more difficult because of globalism.

hi frankie,
as a cultural unit, governments do evolve because there is a cultural niche that they fill. the cultural niche is the human mind, ultimately.
as the niche changes, it's possible that the governments will not survive and continue moving toward extinction.
my personal feeling is that as the human mind expands, and more and more people start moving away from a consumer/having psychological orinetation to a state of being, it will be understood that every single conscious human is self-governing.
i like to say that governments are in the service of property owners, being the largest property owners themselves. but if the human mind makes some sort of mass psychological migration away from a mind state of having to a mind state of being, the concept of ownership would be replaced by something more along the lines of stewardship. and i dunno, land could be used for what it already should be: growing food for it's local citizens to consume and trade with other local communities doing the same thing.
people have to wake up psychologically, first, if there is ever going to be any change from the current system. if not, then cie la vie! i mean, change is hard for people. akin to losing a religion i'd say.
