    My Daily Journal,

It has been another beautiful, warm autumn day. Winter seems an imponderable and distant prospect.

I won't allow myself to be deceived. At least not this year.

A neighbor invited me over. We discussed concerns of the moment and those of the future: where shall we go, what shall we do, who will become part of our lives ...

    We made plans.

You know as well as I what becomes of the best laid plans of mice.

I'm about to start a new journey. It will require pulling up roots. Some roots, not all. How does one move from here to there without yanking the plant totally from the earth? How to remain established "here" and send down some feeler roots "there" shall be an experiment, if not in terror, in uncertainty.

After 30 years in one city this is going to be scary ...

To live a life in fear is to live a life half-lived.

    Or not at all.

I think I'm ready for an adventure.

    Better get dressed first.

    Snow's on the way ... down to 500 f.a.s.l.

Our ski resorts and reservoirs are begging for the wet stuff.

    How's your weather?

    Thanks.

    Greetings, Dear Friends:

I hope that all of you are well and safe, given the state of the weather. Rain/snow is forecast for the entire week here in the Sierra Nevada (California). I'm developing a spot of cabin fever - actually, a full-body "rash" of it - and feeling the necessity of bolting out the door.

One can do only so much reading and writing.

On my walks I often meet new as well as already familiar faces (the bodies are part of the package). I love this comfortable, relaxed way to shoot the breeze. It's always good talking to people, offering encouragement and, likewise, being encouraged. So different from the WT way of approaching the general populace. It's all right to chat happily away, no worry about counting the time!

    Till later,

    CoCo

Twelve hours later and it's still raining. I had to get out again for a second walk. This time I really got soaked.

I believe today's the first day of winter and the beginning of the three day period where the sun rests motionless upon the horizon. Symbolic of Christ's death, if I understand correctly.

I'll have to look further into this.

At least the days will begin to lengthen ...

Longer and longer become the days, and I eagerly use these small snatches of increasing daylight to get done what I must get done outdoors.

    After that, I carry a torch ...

Yesterday, during a walk in the 'hood, I met an 80-something gentleman who was in the Pacific theater during WWII. He was stationed at Guam.

He explained that he had exchanged shifts with another shipmate. That friend became a statistic: approximately 4000 men died in an explosion aboard another ship in harbor - the S.S. Hood. My neighbor participated in the clean-up.
