I have read some of the posts in this thread. These are my thoughts.
I've had to think back through the years I was a JW 1971 to 1999 when I stopped attending meetings.
Now I could say that because of what happened to me that JW's are a nasty group of people. Because of their interference and teachings my JW wife and two JW daughters have not spoken to me for 6 years. That they caused the break up of my family forcing me to leave home and others of my children to follow. That at a time I needed help and support they turned their backs on me, and as far as I am concerned my family also.
But thinking of the JW's I knew through the years. I would say that 99% of them are "good" people. They try to live moral lives and to treat others well around them. I can say that I had some good laughs with many of them.
Brothers/Sisters who were practically round your house every day. JW familes you would go out for the day with. Those who we had round for meals. The parties we arranged for the young children of the congregation. You think you have a bond with such ones.
Then when the crunch comes where are they ? The Elder and his wife, who was round to our house often. A man with a great sense of humour and quite a few risque jokes. But who when the time came was not to be seen, except on my Judical Committee. Who afterwards spoke little to me.
On what basis do you measure that JW's are better than average people? Whats the yardstick?
Is it because they have "God" in their lives? Even some so-called "Christians" can be pretty bad at times.
Even atheists can be "good Christians".
The "ordinary" JW on a whole are no better and no worse than the average non-JW person.
Except for one thing JW's let a man-made organisation control their lives and thinking. I know that there were JW's who would have done their utmost to help me and my family. But because of WT doctrine were prevented.
Well sorry I rambled on a bit there but I was trying to put into words how I feel.
