Last night on the news, a city official said because he almost got into an accident with a teenage girl he decided that he was going to push for banning teens from texting while driving.

If you're going to ban texting while driving it should apply equally to adults as well as teens. You may as well be driving drunk if you're distracted with texting.

It's not illegal to dial a phone number while driving, isn't that the same thing?

I've sent out a few messages, but usually when I'm stuck in traffic.

The politician's view was that kids were less experienced so that's why he was targeting them with a $200 fine.

Aside from how dangerous it is I find it very annoying when someone in front of me is only going half the speed limit. Or the light turns green and they are busy texting, it's very rude and inconsiderate to others.

The same people that insist that they can drive just fine after drinking are very often the same ones who say they can yak or text on thier cell phones without any problems. They are dilusional and ignorant.

Driving a vehicle should take 100% of your attention. Not 90%, not 80% but 100%...period.

Exactly my thoughts. I once left a job over this issue. A former boss insisted that I should answer my cell phone, that the company did not allow me to expense, while I was driving on the highway during rush hour, and even on weekends. I explained to him that I would never risk my life for my own business when I was self employed, so it was ridiculous for him to think I would risk my life for his business.

Scully, impressive video. It shows what so many people do without thinking. P.S. I thik they should ban toll booths too. Trying to look for change before you get to a booth is too dangerous.

playing a radio, CD, having a conversation, having kids in the car, a dog, even another person in the vehicle-----all of these things can be distracting. I have no issue speaking on a cell while driving but texting requires more distraction......

Yes, all those things can be and are distracting.

Listening to the radio/CD player isn't as distracting because it doesn't take your eyes off the road or your hands off the wheel. But then there are those people who dance while driving. They're clapping their hands and singing along and bouncing around. What the hell...go to a disco and get the hell off the road.

Kids in the car. If the kids are taught how to behave in the car, then they can be of minimal distraction...I know now why my father never allowed any horse play in the car. We had to sit still and talk quietly, with no moving around or loud noises or blocking of the windows. But I see soccor moms with 5,6 or 7 kids carrying on in the back of the van. They're jumping around, screaming and hollering. When DVD players first came out for cars, I was surprised at why people thought they needed them...but if you got kids hopped up on sugar and junk food, you need something to shut em up.

Pets are most distracting when they're sitting in your lap. I see people driving around with their dog in their lap all the time.

I think driving is a serious responsibility. One little mistake and people can be killed. Is it worth texting a friend that you're on the way, if it might cause someone to be hurt or killed? Is it worth talking on the phone, carrying on an animated conversation, gesturing with one hand, holding the phone with the other, if it might result in an accident? People are going to do some things that they shouldn't while driving..we all do. But if we make a conscience effort to keep the distractions to a minimum, we'll all benefit from the better driving that will result.

I text more than i talk so i know where most of the letters are from memory so i can look at the road sometime while texting.

So your three years of experience in driving a car gives you the confidence to look down at your typing instead of at the road? I hope you're never around me in traffic.
