Good advice given - I would ask some pertinent questions about the project requirements - is there a point of view to be taken, who is the audience, length, essay-style, is focus on research/history, title of the class, etc., then you'll know better where to point her.

I wouldn't work on doctrine unless you know the theological background of this girl. I'd go for the scandals, since JW doctrine is just another doctrine to somebody who has no belief in scripture.

Keep it simple. Tell the person to Google the word "shit" and then click "images".

an easy place to start would be the videos SeattleNiceGuy did for youtube. http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=hopefulatheist

He addresses some of the concerns without sounding vitriolic. She can get an idea of what in particular interests her about JWs, then pursue that as a particular focus.

"...[her daughter who is attending University of Toronto] is working on a research paper for her religion course and she has chosen to do it on Jehova (SP?) Witnesses.

I think Crisis of Conscience is required reading if she's doing a research paper.

I'd send her to freeminds.org. The nice thing is that site not only deprograms JWs, but it's educational for non-jws as well.

    Hi Mary:

I think it would be great if she compared the information at www.ajwrb.org and the JW-sponsored bloodless therapy sites. She'll have the pro-JW agenda and the Reformist point of view as well. It would make for a very well-rounded project.

OK, her daughter sent me another email that says:

"....The actual paper is to do a comparision of a New Religious movement from the perspective of an "insider" and of an "outsider". I can essentially focus on any aspect, like the teachings or the leader or the religion in general. I guess since I have left my assignment till the last minute (due this Sunday) I wouldn't have time to conduct an interview. If you could just point me in the direction of any good websites or other info when ever you have the time that would be really good. I am thinking of looking at beliefs and practices so any of the ones you've mentioned would be great, especially anything that contradicts itself...."

Since she wants to focus on "beliefs and practices......especially anything that contradicts itself", I think that Quotes would be an excellent site for her......plus, someone (I think Minimus) started a thread on here not too long ago about the "double standards" within the Organization.......The only thing is, if she wants the perspective of an 'insider', do I tell her to contact the local Kingdumb Hall? I sure as hell don't want to do that but I know that when you're persuing academia, you have to be balanced and non-biased. Crisis of Conscience would be great, but as her assignement is due on Sunday, there's no way she has time to read it........
