I think that Paralipomenon is on to something; I think it would be good to invite/allow those organizations that use these tactics to explain themselves, but make sure they are forced to confront questioning of the stances they take; requiring them to fully explain themselves and answer to the criticisms of the reasoning they use to ustify their actions. If they are not willing to participate, at least use abundant material from their publications that demonstrate how and why they practice what they do. The "both sides" approach I believe has the best chance of having an affect on others.

I would love to see how the society would "explain away" the mass suicides (although one at a time) that goes along with many shunning experiences.

However, most j-dubs won't see the movie anyway, so why bother adding "both sides" to the story. I can see by your responses that you will indeed have a huge movie in itself, just with the shunning/suicide issue without making it a two-sided story.

The shunning/suicide dogma is one of my biggest issues in this cult. (see some of my posts on shunning).

If you want to reach the general public through the media, as far as I'm concerned, you are using the right approach. Get the general public to see the movie, and the media to comment on it, and perhaps do their own expose' on it in the future, based on your movie.

Best idea yet. Go get 'em !!!!!

isn't their position that they've lost jehovah's holy spirit and were open to satanic influences, or some propaganda crap like that?

Explain away? They'll simply say it was the person's choice to leave and blame the sin for their degraded state, not the treatment they received from this "loving" organization.

Yes, they can say this, but once the general public sees this movie and see how the shunning affects families, they won't buy it.

I do hope they get caught saying that on tape. Today's society does not tolerate blaming the victim.

Ruby, it's tremendous that you are doing this. We will be following with great interest. It will be a very emotional journey for you, I'm sure.

When I was a child, someone in our congregation was disfellowshipped at the age of 19. His crime was to fall in love with someone who wasn't a witness. His family never spoke to him again. Fast forward a couple of decades. His mother, on her death bed, asks to see her son. Imagine seeing your mother again for the first time - and she's dying. It's painful to think about.

    good luck on your film.

you may also look into russia's court decisions to ban the watchtower because it divides families, the practice of disfellowshipping is part of that decision. it'd be a powerful statement.

i wish i knew how to get in touch with a girl i knew as a teen, she was a babysitter for a brother, he raped her, she was disfellowshipped for " immorality" , her family wouldnt let her EAT with them, she had to fix her plate and eat in her bedroom, this went on till she moved out..she was 14 when this happened. it was one of the most horrifying examples of disfellowshipping i've ever known about.

    Candidlynuts,
Thank you very much for bringing up Russia. You're right. This is a good example of how WTS doctrine often perpetuates and re-inforces existing abuse within families. It gives licence to those who might be already unstable people to continue to abuse and neglect their children in God's name. This is a horrible horrible story. I would genuinely appreciate it if you would consider contacting me directly:

    Thank you for your response.

    Hi Kenneson,
To be honest, I am so angry about Knocking right now that I find it hard to see straight. Thank you for providing this helpful link. There is so much hype, and it is so disturbing to sift through. It is something I have been putting off - but yes - I am well aware of its' existence. I suppose I have to start viewing this as what it really is: another resource. Thank you. Ruby.

    Hello Lady Lee,
Thank you for your response. I would certainly be interested in talking with you. Please do contact me directly at: [email protected]
As I am explaining to all others via e-mail, the response I have received is overwhelming. It will take much time to sift through all the messages I have received (just within the last 20 hours), but I will respond to each and every individual. I have taken off the next year to work on this project - so whether it takes weeks or months I will get back to everyone. Thanks very much for sharing a bit of your personal history with me. Ruby.
