I think that Paralipomenon is on to something; I think it would be good to invite/allow those organizations that use these tactics to explain themselves, but make sure they are forced to confront questioning of the stances they take; requiring them to fully explain themselves and answer to the criticisms of the reasoning they use to ustify their actions. If they are not willing to participate, at least use abundant material from their publications that demonstrate how and why they practice what they do. The "both sides" approach I believe has the best chance of having an affect on others.
I would love to see how the society would "explain away" the mass suicides (although one at a time) that goes along with many shunning experiences.
However, most j-dubs won't see the movie anyway, so why bother adding "both sides" to the story. I can see by your responses that you will indeed have a huge movie in itself, just with the shunning/suicide issue without making it a two-sided story.
The shunning/suicide dogma is one of my biggest issues in this cult. (see some of my posts on shunning).
If you want to reach the general public through the media, as far as I'm concerned, you are using the right approach. Get the general public to see the movie, and the media to comment on it, and perhaps do their own expose' on it in the future, based on your movie.
Best idea yet. Go get 'em !!!!!
