    Doe,

So, how exactly does not paying your taxes change government policy? If you want to disagree with the federal government, then fine. How are you working to change it? And once again, why should taxpayers support your lifestyle when you pay nothing?

I don't know if my not paying taxes will change things, but if enough people don't pay it will. My main reason for not paying isn't to bring change it's because I don't like the [edited]government period. I'd be happy with no government.

I've been watching from the sidelines.

Seems that the tone is back to something resembling respectable. LOL!

Any one who does not pay their taxes but is a citizen has absolutely no freaking business complaining about government waste or government policy.

I am not speaking for frankie, but I think he might be suggesting, John Doe, that the government will continue to do as it wishes with our money(yes, it's ours, we worked for it) as long as we blindly act as sheep.

An en masse refusal to pay the tax would get their attention.

I'm not advocating that. And I get what you're saying about receiving services and benefitting from infrastructure that taxes help pay for.

But what of Halliburton? Should I really be made to pay for that corrupt organization's rape of the American people?

Non-payment of tax as a means of legitimate protest to unjust and tyrannical policies is part of American history.

    Oh. And one more thing!

Welcome to the JWD family franzy!

thanks for the welcome h/life, snakes, frankie..... john...why should i state the obvious, hillary already did so "teasingly". i see two sides of you (please accept my compliments on your expressions in the "dark" thread), but the authoritarian jw or us government style approach is not very appealling. i know which john i'd rather be around....take it for what it's worth..... if this post shows up without paragraph breaks, could someone tell me how to get that straight before i try to post my story on that "newbie" thread?? and right now i've pushed enough buttons that none of the avatars appear on my screen!!!

Well, I've made my point about wanting all the benefits of citizenship but none of the costs, so I'll leave it at that.

Franzy, if you only see two sides of anyone, then you're not seeing much of the whole.

I haven't payed mine for almost 3 years because I don't like what the Government is doing with its war machine and taking away our civil liberties with the patriot act:

Have you ever considered that maybe you are just using this as an excuse and that the real problem is that you are greedy and you dont want to part with your fair share?

For someone who spent a great portion of their life under the thumb of the Watchtower, it seems to me that you should be about the last person on earth pointing their finger at others and calling them indoctrinated, blind followers, gullible, etc...It's like a two pack a day smoker who blows smoke in everyones face for years, then becomes a health nut and won't shut up about the benefits hummus and taboulie.

Is there a psychotropic drug named "reality check"....maybe you should switch to that one for a couple of years.

You will probably get by with not paying your taxes for a little while but you will get caught eventually. When you do, you will pay for your decision with back taxes, fines and interest. Maybe even jail time.

The IRS doesn't goof around. If you are getting notices in the mail, chances are they are getting ready to zap your bank account. Keep an eye on your balance.

It is better for you in the long run to pay your taxes and bitch about it like the rest of us.

Good luck. You will definitely need it.

I've not filed a return in 4 years.

Has little to do with how they use tax money. I believe income tax is imoral. It is also ridiculous to ask the private citizen to keep up with his own taxes. Give me flat sales tax. This I could be happy with. This way everyone bears the tax burden more equally.

The very rich can find ways around income tax. The poor do not pay income tax. Infact they often get money back simply for sputting out a few kids.

The "rich" also get tax breaks simply for "sputting out a few kids."

There are also sanctioned ways of registering your protest. Not paying your taxes is not one of them. I'm the president of our local Condo Board, and some yahoos think they can register their protest by not paying their condo fees. It doesn't matter, we get it in the end when they sell their house. What does their protest accomplish? A lower level of service overall to the property.

The same principle applies to our larger government.

If you don't like living in an interrelated society, get yourself an unclaimed island. Pray no-one else wants it.

After watching the video Zeitgeist, I went and researched many of the points.

On the income tax portion I looked at American tax law. While correct that the income tax law was passed despite not properly endorsed by all the states, the differences in the documents were minor. Capitalization and some punctuation typos. Rather than wait for a perfect document, the government hastily chose to approve the law.

Does this mean the law is open for legal challenge? Perhaps, but it is still considered law regardless of what you think. If you choose to not pay income tax the IRS has the authority to hit you with the full legal force of the system. With wages garnished, assets seized, how is the average individual going to mount an effective legal challenge when finally put on the spot?

As for the "voluntary" part, it was explained on the IRS' website. The payment of taxes is voluntary in that it is the responsibility of each individual to file their own return in lieu of an government agency doing it for them.

Checking with many tax evasion advocates, you will find that most will admit to paying income tax themselves, so as not to provoke the IRS.

If you feel it is unjust, the proper avenue is the legal system. If you abstain from paying income tax based off a YouTube video and a Google search, then I think you will find yourself on shaky legal ground when challenged.

The IRS is severely understaffed and cannot investigate every single avoidance. Do not mistake inaction for complacence. Look at the occasional case of celebrities that are hit with tax evasion. With all their legal power and money, if you think there was a case for non-payment they would be able to find it.

I will agree with John Doe's comment, if you don't pay taxes but avail yourself of government services it is a very hypocritical action.
