My cousin was very active in this no income tax thing. He used to do seminars in Hawaii and in California (who knows, probably other places as well) preaching this same stuff. He is now in federal prison. Not paying is one thing, but preaching about not paying bought him FBI surveillance and then jail time.

It is also ridiculous to ask the private citizen to keep up with his own taxes. Give me flat sales tax. This I could be happy with. This way everyone bears the tax burden more equally.

The very rich can find ways around income tax. The poor do not pay income tax. Infact they often get money back simply for sputting out a few kids.

I do, for the record, file and pay. However, I agree completely with IP_SEC's sentiments.

I would not advocate not paying, but can it be agreed that it is time for major reform?

The rich pay the majority of income tax. I would love to hear how they're avoiding tax and yet paying the vast majority at the same time. It's important to remember that there are dishonest crooks in every income level.

Good points John Doe. That's why, till it gets worked out, we have to keep paying.

I think the feeling that the very rich don't pay comes, in part, from the cases of corporations that use off-shore addresses to evade payment.

On the other hand, some very wealthy are proud of what they pay.

It's a complex issue. That cannot be denied.

IRS, if you're reading this, I absolutely love you.LOL!

I hate the way our government wastes our money but I live here so I pay my taxes. It doesn't bother me so much that I feel a need to find another country to live in. Our government has been broken for a long time. Non-payment of taxes is not going to fix it.

    PAY UP!

He is now in federal prison.

So this is where my tax money is going, helping to feed, clothe and provide medical attention to a prisoner. I don't agree with it but c'est la vie.

Yes, you DO have to pay US income taxes.

It is in your best interest to pay the taxes and to file a return. Once the return is filed, the IRS is limited in how long it has to audit yuou. An unfiled year is always open to audit.

There are some who wrongly think that the US income tax is unconstitutional as the States did not pass it correctly (wrong signatures, etc). Whether or not this is true, US courts have consistently ruled that the tax is constitutional. People who do not pay taxes or do not file returns can be put in jail AND owe the tax anyway. The IRS can put a lien on your house, car, bank accounts, garnish your wages, etc. The IRS is the worst creditor you could ever have. They do not have to abide by the same terms as VISA/MC and other creditors. Plus, when you owe many back years...you probably have lost the original documents needed for deductions. Without the proper documentation, the IRS will deny you the deduction. In short, it is better to pay your income taxes. Plus, if you need to get a passport or other gov't services (social security)....you may be out of luck.

You can get an accountant to help you file those past 3 years. You will have a clean mind and be able to sleep at night.

If you don't like the war, then punish the President and Congressmen and Senators. The IRS is just the collection box for the people VOTED into office. By not paying your taxes, you hurt the troops & the rest of us who pay our fair share.

    Also.....

Do you want to own your home and need a mortgage? What about a business loan to start a business?

You'll need to give the loan officer a copy of your last filed income tax return! Why do lenders ask for this? The reason is that the lender needs assurance that you have filed your income tax returns. Why? The IRS can put a lien on your home if you owe taxes. The IRS's lien is a "higher priority" then the lenders (i.e. the IRS gets paid before the bank). When people do not file tax returns, banks do not want to lend them significant amounts of money as the loan becomes very risky.

Even if you don't need a mortgage now....what about in 10 years? 15 years? 20 years? At some point, you'll want a bank to give you alot of money. It will be much harder & scarier to file a tax return if you haven't filed in many years. How scared will you be then?

I know several people who tried to get away with not paying. One man lost his house, and almost was bankrupt, after they were through with him. He owed about $100,000. After 5 years, they caught up with him.

It may take awhile but they do find you.

The only way you can get out of it, I hear, is if you never had a social security number, and somehow are able to exist without one. The way the laws have changed in the past few years, that would be pretty difficult. Even if you were able to pull that off, you have to not be caught. It would just make it more difficult for them to get you.

I went to a seminar a few years ago, where people were taught how to become "penniless" by putting all their assets in offshore banks, and live on nothing. About a year after that seminar, they were all caught and prosecuted. One man that was a pretty close friend of mine, was Canadian. He moved to the US, and pretty much disappeared, even changing his name for everything but legal papers. Mail, email and any correspondence was all with the pseudonym. He has been successful in avoiding paying taxes. All of his money is in Nassau.
