I read this in a collection I got from the school library.

A man wakes up from cryogenic sleep, to see a painted Bust. He is restrained.

Turns out he is the last human, and the robots have attempted to keep him alive by painting a statue so he is not shocked by their appearance.

The lead robot becomes known as "Sister." The man explains puns, and extends its programming for original thnking. The robots begin to evolve into beings.

Earth is dead. but grass seeds lead to research. The man goes into cryo, and out of cryo as his advice is needed.

Last time he is awoken, the earth is burning up as the sun becomes a red giant.

Next he wakes up on a peaceful planet with beautiful humanoids. He might marry one.

The robots have evolved into super beings.

Sister acknowledges his thanks , unknown to him as he walks across a road to the beach.

I think this story moved me as a young dub, cause it helped me see there were other ways of seeing the future optimistically.

Who is it by. What is it called??

I read a lot of sf, as a dub, This one doesn't ring a bell, though. The positive slant is something that i agree w. Whether robotic or human, evolution is continuing.

Science fiction was absolutely key--completely vital to my freeing my mind from Watchtower control. I've never read that one, though.

I have read a lot of Sci Fi but dont recall that.

Does anyone remember A story about the earth being the pleasure planet for another world. I'm thinking it might be Ray Bradberry, but I havent come across it since I read it in the 70's.

"Second Ending" by James White I think is the book you are looking for.

I read it years ago - don't remember the name of the story. Didn't the robots create funny-colored humans because they were working from a photograph? I hope sacrificial loon has the right answer for you. Then I have my own question. Years ago I read a really funny science fiction book about a movie crew that went back to dinosaur times to make a film, because it would be cheaper to make the movie there/then. But I can't remember the name of the book - it really was funny, though.

That sound like a B-movie called "They Live"

I loved the old sci-fi stuff: Isaac Asimov, L. Ron Hubbard, Robert Heinlein, Philip Jose Farmer.

    Isn't Hubbard the scientology guy?

While this is not the story you are looking for, it is similar: A technician in a nuclear lab is present when something goes wrong, and some radiation escapes. He is transformed into a statue of himself, made of some absolutely unweathering material. No one can figure out how to turn him back into a human again, so he is set up as a memorial, and the rest of the human race continues for several hundred thousand years, then becomes extinct. Other creatures on the planet also continue to evolve, and eventually become intelligent enough to have culture and technology of a sort. Finally, the effects of the radiation wear off, and the man wakes up as the only living human on the planet, now ruled by various dog-people, cat-people, and others. The name of the book was "The Stone God Awakens", and I remember enjoying it.
