Rosalee, you are entitled to your opinion as we are entitled to disagree. The reason I responded to you in a hostile manner is this. Your original response to this post was nothing more than regurgitated fear mongering I have recieved from close-minded people all of my life. When I was a dub, I was harassed for being different and judged as a freak for my beliefs. What you are saying about RR is nothing different, you are attacking what you fear because it's different.

Consider this. I have several tattoos and piercings. The age in my profile to the left is correct. I am not crying out for attention or help as you define it. I like the way I look and have no regrets about any of the decsions I have made regarding my body and my appearance. Lack of a "normal" appearance does not make a person flawed, just interesting. One can still be a very well adjusted and functional member of society without looking traditional.

Your inability to accept people without judgement and condemnation says much more about you than it does the "freaks".

He very likely is a warm, compassionate person.

He gives the appearance of not respecting himself.

A person who respects himself likes themselves, just the way they are.

I certainly will not join in a Richie "backslapping" routine and encourage him in this orgy of bodily mutliation, just as I did not encourage him to ignore his obesity on a thread a couple of years ago which resulted in a furor of attacks on myself when I suggested that his future would not be a healthy one if he did not take care of his weight issues.

I am very pleased that he is taking his health more seriously. Unlike many posting on this and past threads, I actually care about this kid. He is intelligent, driven and deserves a happy future.

That this Board is made up to large degree of sheep who are happy to have others dictate what is hip and what is not, is not my problem.

I remember that thread. I think there's something to be said when someone gives an honest opinion- even if it's not the "popular" one, or exactly what I want to hear.

I do somewhat understand the people who are concerned about what he's choosen to do with his body; although I don't agree with some of their reasons or their approach. I also don't think his tattoo's and piercings have anything to do with Richies "well being". As Hillary said, and I'll quote him again:

I completely agree but it is a fact of life that people judge you based on your appearance especially when it's because of something you've chosen to modify- fair or not it is a fact. Some people are going to see that and think it's a cry for help, like some of the comments I've read already. Making judgement of you before even knowing you. It could even cost you a job you really wanted or needed.
What I think about is mainly Richie's age, he is young and the things he likes as far as the tattoo's and piercings may not fit with the person he is still becomming. It could affect his life in ways he has yet to see. I hope not but it could, that's the thing that worries me. I wouldn't want Richie to be affected later in life ~ be it his work or personal life based on things he did while he was young.
* I wasn't going to comment on any of this, but I felt the need to since this topic is hitting pretty close to home with someone in my life. Tattoos and piercings can be removed through lazer or surgery but they are all extremely expensive, time consuming procedures. Although in time it will be gone, it kills me to see someone I know personally who has so much regret for these same choices made in his youth. I know not everyone who has such extreme body modifications will ever get to a point in their life where they regret them. Coming from the perspective of someone who has, it's very sad for me to see the emotional anguish attached to the choices he made before he knew who he really was. And that's all I want to say.

Personal choices in body decoration/modification have nothing to do with self respect. I don't know what Cleaver -like conservative utopia you're from or where you get the idea that there is anything wrong with freaky people. There's nothing wrong with me or my body, but I have chosen to decorate it as I see fit because it's mine. I have rings in my face because I like the way they look. I have tattoos for the same reason and resent your inference that my well informed personal choices make me defective or wrong. You are a close-minded, shallow and judgemental person. Who really has the problem?
