minimus posed the question: "Do You Try To Be A Politically Correct Person?" Taking the time to carefully and thoughtfully consider his question and all the relevant associations, I must say, with all do respect, "Fxxx NO!"

I noticed that being politically correct is very relative, for example, it is not okay to say to somebody over weight " hey you're a little fat" but most people think it's okay to say to me " hey you're skinny". It's not okay to make fun of other people's culture or "race" but to make fun of the Scottish it's okay. You can't say to a person with darker skin "you are really black" but wen I go to the beach it's okay for people to say to me "man you're really white".

I think some people take this way too far and they take themselves and everyone else way too seriously. I think people need to lighten up a bit. My grandmother was half Indian and I am not offended at all by the word Indian. Many of the tribes, if you check their websites, still call themselves Indian Tribes. I do get rather tired of Southerner bashing though. We can make fun of us, but it's not funny to be constantly stereo typed and berated like it's okay to do it. It's not okay to make fun of people because of their race, but it seems just fine to bash Americans, especially Southern Americans. But even so, I try not to take it too seriously. If you seriously call me a dumb hillbilly, I'm probably going to be thinking: Bigot. I might even tell you so.

I don't "think" in PC terms, but depending on present company may or not speak in PC terms, but my norm would be to just not speak or as little as possible. Arguing with Pc types is just not worth it. I think those that really push PC are just compensating for themselves, trying to make themselves seem more tolerant, when often they are not.

Humor, I love non PC humor, but it seems like only some people can get away with it. South Park is good too, they make fun of EVERYBODY.

I don't like to offend people, but I often do, especially in writing, because I am always right. I am trying to be more aware of it.

Political correctness; I forget what that's about . . . like in a debate on something personally and politically charged, are you supposed to be politically correct or just give the facts? Or just personal anecdotes?

I feel pretty sure that personal innuendoes are inappropriate, but I think it happens often in heated debates because we live in such a polarized society and it causes most of us to assume stereotypical things about the person taking the opposite position, (like, if she had an abortion, she's a murderous whore or if he's anti-abortion, he hates women and such).

I care about peoples' feelings, but sometimes the facts are a key to unlock irrational fears and feelings, so political correctness might not be the answer.

I guess it depends on moods, settings and the issues, but if you're wrong about something or wrong in your approach to whatever is being discussed, it's probably a good idea to admit it and/or remove yourself from the discussion, which I also never have to do.

I guess if you don't have any racist, sexist attitudes to begin with, you don't have to worry about whether or not you're politically correct.

I always find myself the only defender of "political correctness" when this question is asked on these threads.

I think that political correctness actually serves a very useful purpose and that the world has become a better place because of it. Is it awkward? Yes, it can be. Is it self-conscious. Yes it can be, but let me explain its usefulness.

Many terms which can be racially and socially insulting are gradually being expunged from our lives and being replaced with terms that are not insulting. How can that be bad? Society has become a fairer and juster place because of the use of political correctness. How often do you hear the term "nigger" used these days? Or "kyke" or "wop". These stereotypical words were seldom used to honor a nation, but to draw raial divisions. It has changed male thinking regarding females. It has made employees more careful about the liberties that they can take with their workers. It has changed the thinking of millions and made us think twice before we speak.

Of course, the process takes a generation or two to become implemented, but at the end of the day it is, and has been successful in removing from the psyche of a nation terms which are internally damaging. The process of change is evolutionary and often misdirected, but it develops and changes as time ensues and has bought good things to the community.
