Divesting yourself of religious trappings is the first step to actual spirituality.
Not necessarily, for many, the "religious trappings" are an aid to developing spirituality. What we do with our bodies and in externality affects our souls.

Double post sorry
Interesting post, thanks.
I agree with most of what you have said, although I do believe in a force which I call "the ALL"
This "ALL" is a source - the thing which started everything - which started evolution. It isn't necessarily conscious.
Then I think that some of this force interacts with us in varying ways. We put our own human names on the aspects of this force...hence we have "gods". These Gods / Goddesses are simply manifestations of the Divine or All.
That is my philosophy. Of course, we all have our own and we all have every right to make the decision for ourselves.

A hint? Learn to be quiet inside and have no activity related to ones own self current in the mind , no selfish activity at all , only the desire to HEAR God or connect to god for the sole purpose of making the creator pleased ,
Zen?
