Most of them just follow orders. If they are instructed to be compassionate, they will be. If tod to be rigid, they'll act.

I've known elders from one end to the other.

Some were the most decent, honest, respectable men I've known...others were complete and total assholes.

I've known some men who were decent men as pioneers and/or MSs but let the power of being an elder go to their head. I've known some men who became disillusioned after serving as an elder. The politics and the backbiting were just too much for them and they stepped down.

Unfortunately, the "bad" elders outnumbered the "good" elders 3 to 1 with the rest being spineless and useless in stopping "bad" elders from creating a fascist state in the Kingdom Hall.

They were politically minded and had no care whatsoever for anyone who didn't have the potential to make the congregation look good by turning in a ton of hours.

Arkansas had 1/2 frothing at the mouth nutcases - too bad Hellfire isn't in the doctrine - and 1/2 reasonably thinking men (within the limitations of the corral they're in).

Colorado generally decent but very cautions to not make waves with the higher ups.

Northern California in general extremely strict task masters, black and white, authoritarian, slightly icky. Legalistic.

Southern California rather liberal - and generally raised in the organization. Not that you could "get away with anything", but less politics and more focus on trying hit the mark rather than having to be perfect.

    Your mileage may vary...

The elders in the congregation I grew up in were pompous assholes. They tried to control every aspect of everyone's life. THEY raised me, not my parents. Every time I got in trouble for anything, big or little, they were involved. They thought their families were perfect. Come to find out, their kids were just as bad as me and my siblings.....some a little worse.

Plus, 2 of them messed with teenagers in the congregation. One got df'd for it. He was reinstated and an elder again.

Makes be want to really hit something.......

We only had 5 in our congragation...

2- were absolute Sweethearts, honest, humble and really tried.

1- was rather indifferent and seemed preoccupied with his own problems.

1- was young with very young children, worked 2 jobs and was just run ragged.

Lastly, ...the PO....He was and still is, a Total NightMare....!!!

some diehard hardliner jerks. a few very nice guys. one or two "reaching out" types. one who was open to discussion and was not as (d/n)umb as the others. we had many interesting discussions, but in the end i could not understand how someone as intelligent and informed as him could serve the borg in that position.
