A debate, well...more of an argument...that I had with a JW family member one time...(paraphrased)

JW: You need to come back to meetings and become active again

    Me: Why

JW: Because the end is so close...you don't want to be on the wrong side when Armageddon comes

Me: So you think Armageddon is coming soon

JW: Well, we don't know the day or hour, but it will be in a short time and before you know it, it will be here and you'll be on the wrong side

Me: The Society has been preaching the end of the world is imminent for a hundred years and so far they've been wrong. I'll take my chances.

JW: You're willing to gamble away your everlasting life because of your impatience at the end not coming soon enough?

Me: (paraphrased but pretty darn close as best as I can remember) Am I willing to lose a chance at living in a fantasy because I don't believe in wild speculations from a group that so far has a track record of zero in its other speculations? Yes, I am. Are you willing to throw away your current, real life in anticipation of a pipe dream that there is no proof for and the promise of keeps getting put off? I'd rather have what's here now...what's real, then to give it up for a hope in a promise that there's no real proof of. When we're both old and gray, wheeling around in wheelchairs in a nursing home, I hope you don't have alzheimer's because I want you to remember this conversation and realize that you've wasted your life waiting on something that's never going to come.

    It ended badly after that...

The forever commnet, "The end is just around the corner", my thought was always which corner on what planet? I remember a MS and Elder making a comment in 1992/93 during the holidays that this system of things can't possibly last for two more years and this was via the current CO where they got the comment (said during aprivate conversation with him) I told them, you are both going to get old and that system everyone thinks is just around the corner is a very long way off. Well that elder is now 70 and the ms is 50 so I would like to remind them of that comment and ask which corner was it they were talking about.

The Witnesses are like a dog chasing its tail. It's ALWAYS gonna be just around the corner, you just have to hang on a little bit more and focus on how good its gonna feel when you arrive.

I remember graduating from high school in 1969 and getting baptized shortly thereafter. I also remembering the Awake magazine that year assuring us that young people needed to face the fact that they would never grow old in this system of things, and therefore should focus on spiritual things rather than a career. I'm now 55. Would you call that old? I don't know, but the system of things is still here, and that college education sure would have made a big difference in my career opportunities...

the worst part ist, when my parents retire and me, the materialist, will have to support them, they'll most probably view it as a blessing of jehovah. o0

The only end a JW will see is the end of its own life
