Actually it's quite easy to lose weight, I've done it 1000 times. If only we hadn't all these parties at the office when other papy boomers are celebrating their going to retirement. At the end of each one of those I firmly resolve to start dieting , and then another party pops up. Let's keep courage and hang in there !
FAIR WARNING to my FRIENDS~!~!~!

I just lost 30 lbs. on the atkins diet. I deel sooo much better.
Bryan,
That's an awesome diet. I was on it for quite some time and lost a lot of weight but I have gotten off it being to busy and not being able to meal plan. So many times I just "grab something" on the way to and from work and it's so easy to get out of focus sometimes when on it; but while on it, I feel better, look better and lose weight!

50 miles on a bike I'm thinking that would take about 2 hours at 25mph. If you did 2 hours of hard exercise like that 5 days a week a person would be very fit and in shape with a low amount of body fat.
If you just wanted to ride the bike 1 time 50 miles that should be easy to accomplish. Set out on a Saturday on your bike and ride out an hour and a half at 17 mph then head back home and that would be 50 miles
Here in Tampa bay we have a trail, an old railroad corridor that is 34 miles long its full of people riding bikes, skating, running, jogging.
If you want to loose weight sensibly, take whatever weight you want to weigh, say 120lbs
You take 120 x 100 =1200. You can eat 1200 calories a day, if you do that for 3 months and your 20lbs over weight you should weigh 120lbs in 3 months.
130 x 100= 1300 calories 140x100= 1400 calories 150x100= 1500 calories etc.
And you should eat a balanced diet so you can maintain your weight for the rest of your life. Little meat, fish. lots of grain and vegetables and some fruit. Eating a balanced diet is the way to be healthy and get all of the nutirents and building blocks your body needs.
But all of this is easier said than done. We have to cultivate good habits, then become a slave to our habits and thats life.
Good luck with your goal.

JB,
Actually, one time a week at 50 miles would be nice. The other days less. When I was riding I was active as a courier and doing alot of outside yardwork and house remodelling so that kept me fit.
There is some kind of formula for riding, I dont remember what it is ......also after riding so many miles the miles after that are relatively easy.
Hopefully by the time I am 50, there is a new bike trail that is supposed to be finished, starting out in Downtown LR on the river ......going out to a little Mountain 20 something miles away.......and I want to be able to ride it, there and back.
SOme docs I worked for ride and when I can do 50 miles I can do some trips with them!!
Anyway, some people run Marathons........which I could never do..........so mine is this bike goal.
If I got serious about it.........some bike trips get into hundreds of miles which I think would be fun.

Jag, that calculation method runs into some problems. It's a bit more complicated. Basically you need to cut 3500 calories a week out of your diet to lose a pound in that week. So whatever you consume to maintain your current weight, you subtract 500 per day for a 1 lb per week loss. Two pounds per week (depending on how far above the healthy range you are to begin with) is considered the maximum one should try for. The slower it comes off, the better it stays off.
Here's a quick calculator http://www.ahealthyme.com/topic/calneed

Diet Schmiet Purps~ Just revamp your diet, change the way you eat and what you eat for life.
And thanks for the reminder, I went down to re enroll in kickboxing the other day but didn't get signed up. I still need to do that- I'm getting lazy and soft.
Good luck on your 50 miles- that's awesome! -

as a rule of thumb, it's about 10 calories per pound for a person who just sits most of the time - so if you want to weigh 140 pounds, you eat 1400 calories a day until you get down to that weight. If you get moving, more active, you can eat more calories and still get down to the weight you want. It's really just calories in and calories out, in spite of all the discussion about whys and wherefores.
here's another mantra I repeat to myself: "It's OK to be hungry." Or as Ivana Trump put it one time, "hunger is power."
