Merry do you at least agree your founder Mohammed was a pedophile?

    Good question. Important issue.

    Short answer: No, I don't.

    Long answer: http://www.muslim.org/islam/aisha-age.htm

Coincidentally that is the chapter I am now working on for my intended book.

Its so cool the Joe gets into the Koran thread hehehe

Merry is telling you Islam as she has experienced it. For her it isn't about any extreme wife beating however, there will be those men who for whatever reason do beat their women and unfortunately they can quote scripture should they so desire.

Its the same for JWs - JW religion is not about shunning its ostensiably about saving as many people as possible from death but with scriptural aid some nasty behaviour gets justified by some (and not all JWs shun despite that being the requirement) It entirely possible for a JW to defend this practise through personal experience of it being ignored.

Me as an LDS - I'm thinking that multiple wives sounds great and I can't understand why you lot are whinging...

And you believe the facts of this matter are what? and why?

    Hi Qcmbr.

I actually believe that the evidence of approval for wife-beating in Islam is completely out-weighed by the evidence against it. Unfortunately, there are too many men of greater influence than I have that disagree. With or without seeming religious approval, those who are so inclined will do it, and those who are not won't IMO. But those who do it need to face legal consequences, and I think those who teach that it's ok should have to too. Abusing is wrong and encouraging or approving abuse is wrong.

Even in the wondrous West this issue was for too long considered just a private family matter, not a legal one. If a man beat his wife, his kids or his dog no one was supposed to interfere. When my JW mom first moved to the area in which I was raised, she was shocked to find more than one woman on more than one occasion, in one town in particular, answer the door with black eyes and other visible bruising. Thinking at first that some dreadful accident had occurred, she asked the first one what happened, and the answer was a tired and rather nonchalant, "Oh, my husband came home drunk last night and..." Same basic answer every time.

And polygamy... It appears to me that although allowed (some say for the protection and benefit of women who outnumber men) it is not actively encouraged and only a small minority of Muslims have more than one wife. Thanks for the chuckle, Q.

You know what, who cares about how the books are interpreted? Someone who believes the creator of the universe spoke to a man between 1 and 2,000 years ago and told him what to write in a book is just prolonging the problems we face. Some muslims think the book justifies bad behaviour, some think it's a religion of peace. If the belief didn't exist in the first place, we wouldn't be seeing ANYONE killing in the name of Allah, and any peaceful things can still be done anyway. We don't need to believe in flying horses for that!

Numerous authors and there is no point me giving you all the website references and literature. You are going to believe what you want no matter what is posted or what evidence is shown you

Greetings s_w, for me the question isn't so much did we need it to happen or not, but did it happen or not? You have found one answer, I have found another. And so it goes.

Let's not give up on each other that quickly, stilla. Did you find specific information in that reference to be incorrect, inaccurate or otherwise questionable? Do you know of a site that addresses these particular apologetics? If so, I would genuinely like to see it. But I guess I ought not to push you for what you don't want to give. I am still researching the matter and contemplating it so I am sure I will stumble upon at least one of the references you haven't given me. No worries.

    Off to make supper now...

I beleive that in the Australian constitution written about 100 years ago it gives men permission to beat their wives but not more than ones a week and not with a stick bigger than their little finger. Of course this behavour is now considered in prehistoric terms by todays generation.

Islam is supposed to be a religion of peace. Christianity is supposed to be a religion of love.

So the Christians hate the Muslims because the Muslims are not peaceful.

    Isn't it ironic?
