I think it's going to be interesting to see how everyone's different diet works - see what gets results. I did about 1550 calories yesterday, walked up and down hill for 40 minutes which is sort of a record for me. So 1400 net calories. Today I walked as briskly as I could, measured a half mile with my car, took me 25 minutes to walk the half mile. I recognize that is pathetic, but it's only my second day of real walking! On my regular diet today - having brussel's sprouts with my pasta for dinner, haven't eaten all my calories yet. I need to record everything so far and see where I am. So, for day two, I feel pretty encouraged! I enjoyed reading everyone's posts - keep it up!

Count me in as your exercise buddy.

I started running 2 miles, 3 or 4 times a week on a treadmill at Thanksgiving. Then, I went skiing for a weekend. I lost 4 pounds, and never counted a calorie. I've 14 pounds to go.

I suggest www.calorie-count.com . It's free, has calories in food, and calories burned from a boatload of activities.

    Good luck,

45 lbs in eleven months, almost a pound a week. Walking did the trick here, and of course portion control, all the standard advice, but no extremes. Good luck.

yes, portion control was an awful shock. When I started reading labels and actually eating only the portion listed on the package, it was a real eye-opener. Who eats only two ounces of pasta? Evidently everyone but me - I was eating 4 or 6 or 8 ounces of pasta. At 100 calories an ounce! Now I've compromised, I eat 3 ounces of pasta, feels like enough. Thanks for the feedback - and the encouragement. I've just started walking - I think it will help me to another level.

Glad to see everyone checking in...yay!

I hit my goal of 23 Weight Watcher's Points today. My schedule is all off for my meetings though. I usually go to a Tuesday night meeting (which is funny to me...I learn SO much more and get much more support than I ever did at any JW meeting...and hey, it's only 30 minutes!). Xmas and NY on Tuesday this year so I'm doing my official weigh in this Saturday and then again on Tuesday.

My goal by next Tuesday is 2lbs., which will put me just 2lb away from my first goal of losing 10% of my weight.

"My doctor says 1400 calories is about what a healthy middle-aged woman would eat, so I'm trying to stick with that for the rest of my life."

You better not because that is the minimum amount of calories one should consume WHILE DIETING. To maintain weight (no loss, no gain) a woman leading a sedentary life would need 2000 - 2200 calories per day so after reaching your ideal weight you should stick to that amount of calories. Otherwise you will carry on losing weight until you become a starved skeleton.

I was also on diet over 18 months from June 2006 to December 2007 and lost 84LB to reach ideal weight of 160LB. Now I consume 3000 calories per day since I exercise every day, otherwise it would be around 2500 for sedentary living.

I commend those who are actively losing weight through diet and exercise.

It was mentioned that 'reading the labels' is an eye-opener. This is true. Look at some of the ingredients in the foods you buy/use.

Here in the states - they started using a sweetner called 'high fructose corn syrup'. It appears in almost everything that you can imagine (well - that's edible). It is not a natural substance - and is partly responsible for a lot of the weight-gain issues that this country has seen/experienced in the last 25 to 30 years - since its' introduction in the mid to late 70's.

So - as part of your weight-loss program - try to eliminate 'high fructose corn syrup' from your diet. See if you can. You may be surprised.

I know that there are those that will disagree... but that's okay.

    Regards,

glad everyone is checking in - it's encouraging! I am planning a half hour walk at lunch time today. I guess I'm alarming people with my 1400 calorie diet - that's net calories. If I exercise more, I eat more, and keep track of it online - so 1400 calories is what I would need if I just stayed in bed all day! I have plenty of energy and my blood lab report is good - I go in every three months for blood work.
