Those of you suggesting books not on my list. I truly appreciate your suggestions, I'm just not at a point where I can add to my library right now. I do have a running list, a LOOOOOONG running list, of books I want to eventually buy and read.
Help me choose my next book

Of your list I have read: Cider House Rules and Lisey's Story. Both are great. It all depends on what mood you're in.
CHR's is a serious subject and very "real". Lisey's has a fantasy element and it also has some autobiographical elements.
I vote for Liseys' Story.
When you are able, pick up "The Pillars of the Earth" by Ken Follet
Happy reading!

have you tried buying used books on amazon.com? I always check to see if there is a used copy available of any book I want to read. I save a lot that way. Also, unless I know I'm going to read a book over and over, I re-sell my books on amazon.com. It's easy to list your books, easier than ebay, and I sell used books pretty steadily which helps fund this particular addiction.

Pillars of the Earth was great!! There is finally a sequel.
And ummmmm does anyone remember the public library? Being an employee of one, I can't help but wonder...............

Thanks Hortensia and beksbks for your helpful suggestions. I do buy used when I can, but I don't like selling them back. That's also why I dont' like checking them out from the library. Collecting books is something that has been my hobby for many years.
So, of the books listed, which one do you recommend?

Well, in all honesty, I've only read CHR's. I have probably checked out both of the other Irving books, but I never got around to them. Working in the library is a blessing. And a curse.

Oh! And as far as buying books. I used to work at a Barnes and Noble. If I buy a book, I can not let it go. I have no more room for bookcases.

I, too, loved Cider House Rules (and was let down by the movie.) Irvings books don't translate well into movies because they are so dense with characters and plot.
I avoid library books. If I can afford to buy even a used book I prefer it to a book that 150 people have sneezed on and of course someone always has to wipe a booger on a page while reading. I've never understood that.

Pillars of the Earth, or World Without End, both by Ken Follett. Great books.
