I think that Paula Deen should be smeared with mayonnaise, dipped in batter, rolled in breadcrumbs and deep-fried to a golden turn. Served with cheese sauce andextra butter, with a side of pork donuts. Given the state of the country's obesity, heart disease and diabetes rates, she is a menace. She is fat, too.

BizzyBee - very funny! Should we send her your recipe? She is a restaurant cook, and they don't spare the fat because it makes things taste really good. Fried food tastes good too. It's just so bad for us all. I haven't fried anything in years, seldom use oil or butter, have cut way down on cheese (my favorite!!!) and stuff like that. Now when I eat something high-fat, I'm like the people who used to annoy me - the oily feeling in my mouth is yucky and I don't like it.

Paula Dean made macaroni and cheese, one of the ten worst foods there is as far as health is concerned. Then she chilled it, made it into balls, wrapped it in bacon, rolled it in crumbs, and deep fried it. I always wonder if these cooking show people actually eat like they cook on their shows.

With the exception of the Barefoot Contessa, there's no way in hell these cooks eat like this in real life, or they'd all be as big as Fat Bastard. As a rule, most of them have no weight problem. What bothers me is that they are constantly cooking extremely fattening food while at the same time remaining thin. This give the erroneous impression that you can eat 10,000 calories and not gain weight.

The worst instigators of this mirage are:

Giada De Laurentiis on Everyday Italian. There's no way in hell Giada eats the food she cooks. If she does, she must be making several trips to the bathroom each day. Even if she has a very high metabolism which would enable her to eat all this stuff, the fact that the average person does NOT have a high metabolism should be enough to get her to cook less fattening foods.

Nigella Express (who just plain irritates me). She always appears on the verge of wanting to have sex with whatever food she's making.

Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives with Guy Fieri. He travels the country and eats the most fattening food imaginable, licking his chops and telling everyone how great it is to eat manmoth sized portions of diner food that isn't even good for you in moderate portion sizes.

You can't help but like Paula Dean, but 99% of her dishes are saturated with full fat cheeses, whipped cream, eggs, sugar, butter and sometimes a combination of all of them. It's because of eating like this on a regular basis, that Americans in the south-east are the fattest people in the world.

And yes, even our beloved Rachel Ray makes alot of 30 minute meals that are way too fattening. She does occassionally make a healthy dinner, but she needs to quit making a dessert to go with every meal at the end.

The only ones who make any attempt to cut the fat and calories are these two sisters from the Eat, Shrink and be Merry Show. I've got their cookbook and it is fantastic. I've done their "Smackaroni and Cheese" and it's actually better than regular macaroni and cheese. I've made several of their recipes and they're all wonderful. If you're interested, here's a link to some of their recipe make-overs: http://www.foodtv.ca/recipes/Browse/browse_result.aspx?DropShow=106377

Now Giada is a "dish" I could eat.

    Glad you're ok Hortensia.

thanks for the link! I agree with you - there's no way those people eat what they cook. Michael Chiarello cooks decent meals most of the time, and there are a couple of health-related cooking shows too. I once wrote to Martha Stewart to comment that the meals in her magazine averaged a half cup of fat per person. That will kill you pretty quickly, I bet. No response from Martha. I can't stand Rachel Ray, and every time I see her say she's going to cook a healthy meal in 30 minutes I roll my eyes. Her meals are high fat, high starch.

I'm trying to remember the list of the ten worst foods - I remember macaroni and cheese, cheese burgers and alfredo sauce were the top three. Southern fried chicken. what else?

Thanks, Mary I haven't seen them before. Their recipes are right up my alley - more whole grains.

Personally, Paula Dean drives me nuts with that corn-pone accent! And the food is nearly nauseating to anyone who cares about a healthy diet.

I'm glad your procedure went well. Isn't it nice that there are so many non-invasive treatments nowadays?

As for the fried mac and cheese, anything with bacon would be yummy! I try not to eat too much junk food, but the mention of bacon anything makes my mouth water!

Sorry, I forgot to say in my last thread: I'm glad your procedure went well Hortensia!!

Yep----Now that I've figured out that you have to cook whole wheat pasta longer than regular white pasta, I love it! One of my best 'makeover' recipes is my homemade pizza. I use organic whole wheat dough to start off with, put some organic tomotoe paste and a very small amount of low fat cheese (so everything doesn't slide off). Instead of pepperoni, I use low fat turkey kabosa. The rest that goes on the pizza is veggies: roasted red peppers, roasted garlic, mushrooms, tomatoes, green olives and onions. Okay, I admit it---I carmelize the onions but I only use 1 tsp. of sugar to do it and da-umn are they good!!

I then put a combination of provolone, asagia and mozzerella cheese (all low fat) but I use it sparingly----maybe 3/4 of a cup for an 8 slice pizza. Cook it at 425 for about 20 minutes and it's done.

It's funny---you can actually get used to eating the healthy stuff because I was at some friends' house a couple of weeks ago and they ordered a pizza from Pizza Pizza and I had one bite---it was awful, all that grease.
