    stillexjwelder,

:I am a skeptikal scientist - have never believed all the hype about global warming

I wished more people felt that way. The media has led the frenzy to convice people that not only is global warming a FACT, but the increase in carbon dioxide is tantamount to Armageddon. The average citizen can't or won't take the time to look at the arguments from both sides and frankly, because of today's school system failures, they couldn't understand the arguments if they tried.

Therefore, since everyone is claiming global warming is fact, they just parrot what everyone else says. Disasters like the McCain-Warner trade and cap bill could easily not only throw this country into a depression, but throw the whole world into one, all because it proposes to solve a problem that isn't even proven nor can it even be predicted accurately.

El Ninos are supposed to be a result of global warming. They happen every four or five years. Scientists cannot even predict when they will occur! let alone predict what the GLOBAL weather will be like in 5, 10 or 20 years.

Speaking from experience - glaciers are melting on the mainland.

    Interesting about the ant-arctic, though.

It's hard for the ordinary person to know which scientists to trust - but my position is that I don't really care. Go ahead and shoot me. We have a lot of other things to fear that are a little more immediate. The earth is warming - doesn't it do that every few millenia? And then it gets really cold which would be another set of problems. I think the rice shortage worldwide and the acres of farmland under water are much more likely to cause a lot of problems.

FOLLOW THE MONEY! ... think "CARBON TAX"

WHO HAS TO GAIN FROM THIS?

One man's meat is another man's poison. Someone somewhere will make money out of this. Think wind power, research, wave power, geothermal, electric cars. Someone will make money. It is an ill win that blows nobody any good.

    shamus,

Antarctica holds 90% of all the ice on the earth and it is getting colder. In many place there the ice is 5 and 6 MILES THICK! Now global warming is supposed to be an increase in the AVERAGE temperature of the planet. That would mean that everywhere the atmospheric temperature is going up.

With regards to what you call "the mainland":

"Since 1940...data have undergone predominantly a cooling trene...The Greenland ice sheet and coastal regions are not following the current global warming trend." "Global Warming and the Greenland Ice Sheet", Climatic Change 63, 201-21.

Since 1930 the climate in Iceland has been getting colder and since 1970 the glaciers have been growing in size. In fact there are now 11 surging glaciers in Iceland and they advance forward the length of a football field every single day.

California has 497 glaciers and there are 160,000 glaciers in the world. Only about 67,000 of them have been inventoried and very few of them have been studied. There is data for change in the mass of glaciers for only 79 of them in the entire world!

Obviously, some are melting, but the vast majority are not. It's been happening for hundreds of thousands or more years and long before anyone even knew what fossil fuels were.

When someone really tries to sell me something, my BS meter goes off very quickly..and when Gore came out with his movie, something didn't seem right....and I'm glad to see that I wasn't alone. I hold "global warming" in the same camp as the "Free Tibet" people...it's just a feel-good bandwagon issue and I won't be pressured into supporting it.

What exactly about the theory of anthropogenic global warming do you find to be BS, Sirnose?

Obviously we'd all be better off when the earth returns to the state it was in ten or twenty thousand years ago: all of North America and Europe under about a thousand feet of ice. No wait, that would be bad for women and children too. We all need to work very hard to keep everything JUST RIGHT. Whatever that is.

I do not believe in Global warming completely because the science is not purely defined and confirmed

Remember when they said the ozone hole in the Arctic was widening and this was going to cause some problems , well guess what it

closed up and its back to normal or perhaps even smaller .

Sometimes I think the scientific community puts forth speculative theories just so they can get monetary grants from their governments.

I wonder what caused all of the global warming to bring to the end of the ice age ?
