TALESIN- I agree. I too feel we all have a sense of right and wrong - and we know when we are causing harm to someone or not. Don't need religion to tell us that.
FREUDIAN SLIP- Interesting statistic you shared ! Shows that lots of inmates claim to be religious !
TREVOR- Yes- I too think society that we live in sets the dictates of what is acceptable in a good way or not. Religion has held extreme views on many things . That's why so many wars are started- due to religious differences.
RENEEISORYM- I'm glad your becoming a Christian has helped you to become more of a success in your own eyes - and has helped you avoid those pitfalls that troubled you before . As for your assessment of yourself as , " never being anything but wretched and imperfect and an impossible failure until the resurrection. " I don't see you that way ! Look at what you have accomplished ! Give yourself credit for those accomplishments !
See- THAT is what I didn't like about being a Jehovah's Witness- Nothing we did was EVER enough ! Renee- I think you've come a long way and it's not wrong to give yourself and God credit for your accomplishments ! You are good !
QUIRKY- I agree. There are more good people than bad out there I believe and each person has to decide whether they want to pursue good or bad. Sometimes we might do a little of both !
HOPE 4 OTHERS- I agree with you . People are generally pretty nice. I've seen that too - I have met a lot of nice people after exiting the witnesses.
CALIBER- Very good point ! I learned a lot about being kind and loving from my mother as well ! Learned the whole 9 yards from her about how to treat people. I feel lucky.
FIFI-40- I agree that most folks want to do whats right in life's journey. We really don't know people's motivations or lives experiences on the board , however- What people say and how they treat others sheds much light on their disposition, and is pretty telling.
BARBIE DOLL- I agree with you. There are very good people out in the world who are not religious. And there are good religious people as well. But we have to be careful and pick and choose. There are some religious, and non-religious people who can have ulterior motives which aren't pure

it is obvious that without religion you are undoubtedly a terrible, horrible, sadistic, monstrous, hedonistic bastard.... that is all
no but seriously, this is a funny topic, i serve in a restaurant, and i was joking with some older ladies the other day about dining and dashing... the one lady says, we go to church, so we would never do that.... i said ok, and thought to myself, does church, or religion always make you a good person? i mean hitler was a catholic, so was mussolini... they were monsters... they were religious... so i think the answer is no, religion does not make you a good person....
i think the only thing that can make you a good person is a sincere attempt to understand those around you and their reasons for their actions... a good temperament, and really an effort to be good... and the next question is this; who defines good? ill leave the debate on that question to all of you

AWAKENED at GILEAD- Hey dude ! How are you ? Very true, good religious people may be bad ! Like the ones you mentioned. It amazes me how the witnesses seem to think that within themselves is SO MUCH SIN, that they can't just be nice of their own volition, without being coerced. It's so weird to me. What's so hard about being nice ? Peace out to you too !
BETTER DAZE- I agree too- Being nice should be it's own reward. And Birthdays are cool ! Peace out, Mr. Flipper -

THE INFAMOUS ONE- Very good post by you ! Thanks ! I agree - Hitler and Mussolini were Catholics- didn't make them any better people , good point !
My wife when she was in her early 20's used to work as a waitress in restaurants , and once a month the " Christians Businessman Club " would meet and my wife said that those were the men who would ogle and stare at her up and down her body as she was serving them. Real Christian men- with " wandering eye syndrome ". But you made a good point when you said that a good temperament and understanding others will help us become better people. I like that.
TWITCH- No. I agree with your answer as well -

reneeisorym,
Very good thoughts you present , truly honest , forthright, I respect you for that... I suppose it all comes down to
intent and purpose of each individual . To serve from the heart, with a honest heart .......is always key.

Of course not.
A better question is do you need religion to be a good person?
Look at people in prison, and how they find god and become 'good people'. They need god. Some people need religion to be good. I don't want to globally label any group, and that's not my intent. There are crackpots everywhere, weather god is involved or not.

SHAMUS 100- I agree with you. Some people do need religion to be good. Perhaps those in prison like you say who don't have the ability or will power to keep straight and narrow. So one color doesn't paint all- I agree. Peace out , Mr. Flipper

Personally I find 'I am good because I WANT to be' is infinately preferable to ' I am good becase my religion says I HAVE to be'.
