This is getting ridiculous. All religion ever does is cause confusion and division. It is time to bitch slap these religious purveyors and put an end to this nonsense.

Priest: No communion for Obama supporters

Priest says it's because the Democratic president-elect supports abortion

COLUMBIA, S.C. - A South Carolina Roman Catholic priest has told his parishioners that they should refrain from receiving Holy Communion if they voted for Barack Obama because the Democratic president-elect supports abortion, and supporting him "constitutes material cooperation with intrinsic evil."

The Rev. Jay Scott Newman said in a letter distributed Sunday to parishioners at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greenville that they are putting their souls at risk if they take Holy Communion before doing penance for their vote.

"Our nation has chosen for its chief executive the most radical pro-abortion politician ever to serve in the United States Senate or to run for president," Newman wrote, referring to Obama by his full name, including his middle name of Hussein.

    Holy Communion? That's just crackers!

There's a definite case for the church losing its tax-free status.

FunkyD, that was the first thought that crossed my mind! Rebel made a post a dew days ago about tax-free status of churches. The complaint form she posted listed influencing elections as a reason to lose that status. I'm going to look for that and give it a bump.

That's a bit like the pot calling the kettle black.....What about the disgusting practice of pedophilia that's been going on inside the Catholic Church for god-knows how long? Is that any less of a "sin"?

All religion ever does is cause confusion and division.

Don't think all Catholic priests feel this way. A lot of them are for Obama. My therapist is a Domincan nun. Guess who she voted for? Wasn't McCain.

My good friend Mother Val and her partner Deb, Anglican Catholics, they are big Obama supporters and thanked Andy and me for voting for him.

I think you are wrong that religion only causes confusion and division. Fundamentalist religion may be guilty of this, but more progressive thinkers and those embrace inclusion and universal thinking are not divisive.

So how does he expect to identify all the Obama supporters? Why not give communion to all and let God sort it out?

This just shows how stupid religion can be.

As one poster put it perfectly, it's a good place for mean spiritied people.

Many priests will tell you that communion is not for perfect people, but to heal broken people. They will tell you that church is a spiritual hospital and the best place a hypocrite can go for healing. It's really a smaller fraction of Catholics that are so extreme. You would see many more Catholic priests and nuns, bishops and so on standing up against Obama and his Catholic consitituency if it was such a big issue for the Catholic Church.

Andy's parents are very devoted Catholics. They are pro-life. But they voted for Obama and are in good standing in their church. They don't feel the Republican party is pro-life. Many Catholics feel that the GOP highly touts the death penalty and has no problem with unjust wars that kill pregnant women, babies and children.

Edited to add: most Catholics don't care what the priest thinks about who should take communion. They take communion. My therapist tells me that though I am not Roman Catholic, she advises me to take communion at the Catholic church anyway. She told me that she is saying that not just as my therapist, but as spiritual counsel. I haven't done it, but I might someday.
