If you think you don't live in a racist community, you are mistaken. The difference is that some places are openly racist and some are not.
I'm the opposite of you--I feel more comfortable in a place where people tell you exactly what they think, good or bad.

I don't know if one must call it racism but the first time I experienced different treatment based on skin colour was in a french overseas territory where I found that locals, mostly black, would purposely adopt an insulting attitude toward the white, small telling things like overtaking them while queuing at the post office, and the tone they would take to speak to them. I've married a mixed blood girl but it was within the JW congregation and I must admit you wouldn't find such racist attitude with JWs, so it was all the more a malaise when I would face it outside. No surprise, under such conditions, that we white JWs would limit our frequentations to JWs.

I hope your daughter dumps her boyfriend over this. That'll give him something to think about.
Besides, if he's this way towards AfAms, I'll bet he'll be pretty heavy-handed with her, too, re: a woman's place, etc.

With me being black and living minutes away from where Purps lives, I can say that there truly is alot of expressed racism around here. I've been called the N word several times by children back when I was younger, so i'm very sure it was learned from their parents. Unfortunately, racism will always exist. I'm glad your daughter is standing up to this.

PURPLE SOFA- It is great you are supportive to your daughter in her acceptance of inner racial dating and her non-prejudiced views . It is too bad we live in such a fractured society where people can't treat and accept others as human beings without being prejudiced about race. I was raised in Bakersfield, California where in my High School there was 33% whites, 33% black, and 33% hispanic. So I was raised in a culture full of variety . One of the first girls I dated was black. Actually she was my first kiss at age 16 as a matter of fact.
It seems your daughters boyfriend needs an education on race relations. If he is that prejudiced , then I can see why your daughter hung up on him. Perhaps it would be good for your daughter to re-assess her relationship with the young man if he is prejudiced towards other races. If he does that at work - he probably does that other places as well . I wish you and your daughter well in dealing with this situation
