I saw one not 500 feet from my property line last year. There's a bunch of them now. There is an entrenched interest in maintaing the perception of problems even when these get resolved.

I think you're taking a rather myopic view of the essay. It was written nearly ten years ago, so perhaps the kitties you speak of have rebounded since then. Surely you are aware that many, many species have become extinct as a result of mankind's machinations? And that there is a domino effect from this?
You are ignoring the big point: We are headed toward a world that will be significantly different - bleaker - than the one we inhabit today. Because humans are survivors - like weeds - we will ultimately inherit the barren, ugly world we deserve if we do not do something now to change that course. I likely won't experience it firsthand - but your children and my grandchildren might.
