Considering the "excuse" they originally gave for getting rid of the weekly book study was because the price of gas was so exorbitant, to turn around and compel people to go out of state for district conventions seems to be totally contrary to being in the average JW's best interests, especially when you factor in the additional expense of hotel accommodations and eating out.
Big News! 2009 District Conventions moved OUT OF STATE!

Perhaps the arena they've been using has more important, and more profitable bookings, (i.e pig races or donkey milking) and there's just no room for the watchtower loons this year.

And here is the irony:
- Donations have dropped forcing the WTS to move the convention to a location farther away in order to save money.
- Because everyone is having to pay much greater travel expenses, they will be making smaller donations.

They could mandate that everyone only wear poka dots to all meetings henceforth as long as they follow it with "this is Jehovahs loving provision" and they will do it.
These days its all about saving money for them. Or getting them out of legal binds. Or avoiding legal liability. Or...passing the buck.
Good news is even LESS people will go now because they wont be able to afford to.

So much for the "high gas price" excuse for deleting the book study. That is going to waste a lot of gas, just to save the Washtowel Slaveholdery a few dollars.
My suggestion is that donations be reduced by the amount of extra money that they had to spend on gas to attend, and the amount of extra time (I believe drivers can make around $25 an hour). If they have a deficit at the end of the final session, that's their own damn fault.

It will be interesting to see if there is any decline in numbers attending district conventions.

Did they send a list of approved gas stations to each of the congregations? Or maybe approved restaurants that are contracted to give JW discounts?
