I couldn't sleep last night. Paranoia, sense of danger, nerves. Wife got pissed, especially when she saw me sitting downstairs last night on the couch with the laptop and a shotgun (surfing the net, emailing and posting on JWD). She doesn't like to go to sleep alone. I went outside a couple of times with a "feeling". Then a chopper flew overhead. As some of you know, I am somewhat remote, sparsely inhabited, and a long way from help, I'd guess at least 15 minutes unless a police patrol happened to be near. I ended up staying up til 3am before I could sleep. This morning on the way to work my wife calls me after hearing news on the radio. I am also no longer going to keep the shotgun in the gunsafe, maybe over the bedroom entrance. A .38 doesn't feel like enough. Fortunately,my bedrooms are all on the second floor, and the stairwell is a very defensible corridor. Whatever tries to come up will be educated. The Democrats wants to disarm me? Come and take them. The Democrats wants to disarm me? Come and take them. I guess I missed that. What some Democrats want to do is make it harder to get assault weapons and handguns. Hunting rifles and shotguns have never been on the table. Yes, some wacko fringe liberals think we'd be better off without guns period. Most Democrats disagree. I personally love guns. I think the more guns honest citizens have the better off we are. Most Democrats from my area agree. For the record I do not support the assault weapons ban, nor do I support hand gun restrictions. The right to keep and bear arms is in our constitution. I believe that includes ALL firearms. Mortars, rocket launchers, hellfire missiles, etc. I would really love to get my hands on a couple of hellfire missiles! Good-bye tailgaters!

On another note......I'm getting ready to purchase my first hand gun and I cannot decide which one to buy. I like Glock's based upon their simplicity, safety, and price point....do they jam a lot? Also, 9mm, .40 s&w, or .45 acp? The 9mm appeals to me due to low recoil, max capacity, and price of ammo, but all my friends keep telling me they have no stopping power.
.40's are said to blow up sometimes. 45's have massive kickback. My thinking is to start with a 9mm to get used to shooting a handgun then move up.
Anybody got any advice?

Shotguns are excellent close quarters defense weapons. Never use a hand gun when you can use a long gun. Shotguns are far more effective.
Jeeprube:Glocks are excellent. Many think they are the best handguns, are incredibly reliable and don't jam very often. All the calibers you list are adequate, but the .45 ACP is the largest bullet. If you are comfortable with the recoil (and you look like a big strong fellow), I would go with that.

Witness007, this statement makes it evident that you have absolutely no clue about what a shotgun is or what it's for.
If you're going to slam guns and gun owners, as you have in the past, at least educate yourself about the basics. Then maybe you won't appear as stupid.

I'm a liberal Democrat, and I believe in the right to bear arms. My husband keps a shotgun upstairs, and I have a handgun downstairs. Both weapons are loaded and within easy reach but out of the way of our grandkids. And yes, I will shoot any sonofabitch who means me harm. No question...No problem.
