Hmmmmm interestingly, suicide rates are almost exactly the same in both countries.
Here comes the GUN CONTROL.

Historically, the violent crime rate in Canada is lower than that of the U.S. and this continues to be the case. For example, in 2000 the United States' rate for robberies was 65 percent higher, its rate for aggravated assault was more than double and its murder rate was triple that of Canada. However, the rate of property crimes is lower in the U.S. than in Canada. For example, in 2006, the rates of vehicle theft were 22% higher in Canada than in the US. [ 5 ] Since violent crimes are a small fraction of all crimes, this means that the overall crime rate is actually lower in the U.S. than in Canada
Furthermore, in recent years, the gap in violent crime rates between the United States and Canada has narrowed due to a precipitous drop in the violent crime rate in the U.S. For example, while the aggravated assault declined for most of 1990s in the U.S. and was 324 per 100,000 in 2000, the aggravated assault remained relatively steady throughout and was 143 per 100,000 in 2000. In other cases, the U.S. had a faster decline. For instance, whereas the murder rate in Canada declined by 36% between 1991 and 2004, the U.S. murder rate declined by 44 percent. [ 6 ]
The homicide rate in Canada peaked in 1975 at 3.03 per 100,000 and has dropped since then; it reached lower peaks in 1985 (2.72) and 1991 (2.69). It reached a post 1970 low of 1.73 in 2003. The average murder rate between 1970 and 1976 was 2.52, between 1977 and 1983 it was 2.67, between 1984 and 1990 it was 2.41, between 1991 and 1997 it was 2.23 and between 1998 to 2004 it was 1.82. [ 7 ] The attempted homicide rate has fallen at a faster rate than the homicide rate. [ 8 ]
By comparison, the homicide rate in the U.S. reached 10.1 per 100,000 in 1974, peaked in 1980 at 10.7 and reached a lower peak in 1991 (10.5). The murder rate dipped below 6 for the first time since 1966 in 2004. The average murder rate between 1970 and 1976 was 9.4, between 1977 and 1983 it was 9.6, between 1984 and 1990 it was 9, between 1991 and 1997 it was 9.2 and between 1998 and 2004 it was 6.3. [ 6 ]
Gun ownership and gun violence
Several studies have examined the correlations between rates of gun ownership and gun-related as well as overall homicide and suicide rates within various jurisdictions around the world. [ 60 ] [ 61 ] Martin Killias, in a study covering 21 countries, found that there were substantial correlations between gun ownership and gun-related suicide and homicide rates but no correlation between gun ownership and total suicide or homicide rates. [ 62 ] It also reported a strong correlation between gun-related homicide of women and gun-related assaults against women; however, this was not the case for similar crimes against men. [ 63 ]
Similarly, a study by Rich et al on suicide rates in Toronto and Ontario and psychiatric patients from San Diego reached the conclusion that increased gun restrictions, while reducing suicide-by-gun, resulted in no net decline in suicides, because of substitution of another method — namely leaping. [ 64 ] Killias argues against the theory of complete substitution, citing a number of studies that have indicated, in his view "rather convincingly", that suicidal candidates far from always turn to another means of suicide if their preferred means is not at hand. can you explain why California's homicide numbers are only slightly higher than Kentucky, and lower than Nevada, New Mexico, and Mississippi? Why Louisiana's numbers are double California?
State laws. I'm not kidding. You should check out the laws in Louisiana. Like the 60 day law. If you get arrested for murder in Louisiana, and they can't bring it to trial within 60 days or less all charges are let go. The bad guys know this and us it.
Poverty rate?
Education? People pre SQ mile Canada: 9.27. People pre SQ mile USA: 85.3 FACTS! I can do this all day. -

Just to clarify, cuz I think you guys may laboring under a false assumption.
But what makes people crazy? I mean it's not generally organic, it's some societal...........pressure. It's not about how many guns people have. Other countries have guns, Canada for example. But why is our culture here in America so much more intense? Why are we so much more violent?
That was me.
I just don't buy that popluation density is the problem. The breakdown within each country doesn't bear out that theory.

10 x the people = 10 x the crazy

Ok discussion over I guess. It's settled. Population control is the answer to yet another problem. Thanks RR!

I find it funny and sad, that is what you have took from this thread.
BTW: I did notice that you had nothing to say about illegal immigrants committing crimes in the states. Any thoughts? -

Have you any of you read Dr. Thompson's essay, below? What do you think?

Bendrr
Ok, someone said "nobody is coming to take your guns away".
Um, did my good friend perhaps miss what happened in New Orleans? There were mass ILLEGAL door-to-door gun confiscations.
Here in Georgia, we have police and sheriff departments that are completely ignorant of state law who arrest gun owners based on whatever they *say* the law is.
We have a President with a horrible anti-gun record and a Congress dominated by anti-Second Amendment Democrats. We have an Attorney General with an equally horrible anti-gun record who has stated that he wants an "assault weapons" ban even though the only guns banned are "cosmetically incorrect" and not true "assault weapons".
Beks said "we're all in this together" and she's right. What affects us gun owners affects all Americans.

I don't know about all that. I would say that perhaps those that become violently sociopathic or psychopathic this might be correct. However I don't think that holds true for the vast majority of mental illness patients.
Yeah bendrr that crap in New Orleans was WRONG and I don't think that the US government has heard the last of that bullshit yet! In this regard I'm right up there with the rabid conservatives you can have my guns as soon as you pry them from my cold dead hands!
