I don't think that following the letter of the law on speeding is always sane. And remember, John doe, rules are made to be broken.

I don't either. However, the system is set up to give cops discretion, and the vast majority of them exercise it wisely. There will always be some who abuse the system. But overall it functions well.

Getting a ticket for going 2 miles over the speed limit is just plain dumb. I'm sure Clinton would've agreed.

And on a side point, there are enforcable laws that are on the books that say homosexual acts are illegal, John Doe. Just because a law exists, it doesn't make it right. Recently, in Mass., a trooper gave a ticket to a driver whose wife was going thru labor in the car! He followed the letter of the law because the husband was driving in a breakdown lane to get thru rush hour traffic. 2 other troopers allowed it for obvious reasons. In the end, the police withdrew the ticket after much public outcry. Dumb cop, again.

Shouldn't parents be the ones to, you know, parent?

Ok that is true, but what do you do about the parents who refuse to parent? We have teenage vandals running around in a small town close to where I live. Where are their parents? I know of a 6 yr old that lives down the street from me that from the time he was 4 was allowed to run the neighborhood and the surrounding areas. We are talking about a 1 mile radius that I saw this kid in from before he was old enough to go to school. This family has let all their kids run around like that.

    Doesn't make it wrong either.

I am fine with the curfews so long is there is a provision for parents to provide a note for situations of travel.

Ex: Mom is sick, baby sibling is sick and 17 yr old gets sent to walmart for supplies.

Ex: 16 year old is setting off to drive to grandma's at 4am and needs to gas up their truck.

Ex:17 year old gets back late (or arrives early in the morning) from weekend visit with Dad.

Usually these laws only effect residence within the city limits......

San Antonio has/had a law like that and it made returning back from the Jr. rodeos a pain for our SA friends.

    A note?

I say don't put laws on the books that ultimately are violating a person's rights. 17 year olds have rights too.

Since the teens are not of the "age of majority," they are granted very few personal liberties or rights. And they need to keep their asses home between 11p - 5 a. Sure, it's up to the parents to parent but teenagers are sneaky and sometimes can pull things over on their parents. So, imo, towns do have the right to curfew teens between those hours
