It sounds like you need to borrow my cat Agnes - She has killed so many squirrels ...
I second that 'wow.' Our cat's a good birder (a pity - it's killing season again), but can never get the squirrels (not that I'd want him to).

Burns, that had me cracking up with laughter! 4 bungee cords attached to a tupperware container, stretched to the limit against a box.....I'm close, real close to constructing that incase this squirrel flipper doesn't work. (All items in stock between the kitchen and garage!)
Magwitch, I have old "Girlie"a 15 pound cat, that now sleeps during the day, but was once a mighty hunter. I also have Maximus the 100 pound Doberman that watches out the window, but only barks at any cats in the area. His older pal that died, hated squirrels and would stalk them like a cat. He would have been mortified at the view!

Purps, the bird you describe sounds like a woodpecker. Am I right? http://www.paulnoll.com/Oregon/Birds/habitat-Woodpecker.html
I've got a bunch of bird feeders. And a critter feeder too. Birds, squirrels, it's all good.
We have found killing a few squirrels and nailing them high on some trees , has kept our yard from being over-run. We hang them out after the migrating birds have passed through. The squirrels are busy off in the forest till late fall , so they aren't a pest at the feeders yet. My husband puts a fresh squirrel out when they return. He hangs them away from the feeders & cover the songbirds like to use, because the dead squirrels attract hawks & eagles.
I have to bring the feeders in at night because of the bears, if I forget or am a few minutes late getting them in , they are gone or smashed. I buy cheap feeders , I forget them too often. I also like to leave one feeder out near my back door till late , for the flying squirrels. They are so cute to watch at night.
There is a pileated woodpecker in the neighborhood! The rarest bird I've seen is a purple thrush. The past few years there have been fewer birds, I heard it was the west nile killing them off.

jgnat,
It was not a woodpecker, I have not had time to look up what this bird was, I have never seen one like it before, I will try to figure it out tomorrow. The coloring on it's head was quite brilliant.

Appalachians?
OK, jgnat, I think it must have been a woodpecker,
It looked mostly like this from the pics I can find online.
We have allot of woodpeckers here, but look more like the pic of the link you posted.
We just had one of our birdfeeders almost destroyed by a raccoon last night. We heard a ruckus on the upper deck. He had climbed the deck support and started to try to rip open our finch feeder. Crikey!....I guess we'll have to bring the feeders in at night now!! What a hassle that's gonna be! Darn critters!!
Restrangled -- I'm expecting my Yankee Flipper on Monday or Tuesday! Can't wait!
Lavender, the Yankee Flipper has been up all day. They haven't dared try to jump to it yet. They did shimmy down the wire and try to get the lid off. No dice, and like the add says, its too big and long for them to get their arms around to get to the feeding ports. They did manage to get yet another feeder damaged today, dropped to the ground and expensive seed spilled all over the place.
I'm still waiting to see the big, fat, bossy male get spun and thrown.....he's getting close to jumping to it. The birds love it, and will sit longer at this feeder much longer than others. It seems the perch part is comfortable for them and theres plenty of room for everyone.
Sorry about your raccoon raid! The instructions with this feeder said, raccoons can damage it which will void the warranty, and its best to bring it in at night if you have them. Let me know how it goes in your yard!
