Well if the threat of punishment worked 100% of the time we wouldn't need prisons. Now, as to whether everyone that's in prison actually belongs there is a whole nother story.

I do not believe in a God or gods, but I do think that religion (has) serves(ed) as a framework upon which a society can be built. Religion is one of many levers that can be pulled, although it is a big one. Maybe someday we'll outgrow it, but not in my lifetime.

Another showed the statue of Saddam Hussein being pulled down in Firdos Square, a grateful child kissing an American soldier, and jubilant Iraqis thronging the streets of Baghdad. Above the images was a quote from the Bible: "Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him…To deliver their soul from death."

Yes, now, but I'm not saying it's better, it's more like a stepping stone on the way to a more advanced society. Like how we've advanced from groups to a tribe, to city-states, to nation-states, and now on to a more global society. Religion as part of society has followed a similar evolution from shamanistic, to polytheism, to monotheism... to atheism? Religion is simply a part of what has made humanity what it is today.

I do think that humanity could achieve more without the crutch of religion, but are we mature enough as a species to walk without that crutch?

Well I can walk fine without it, but being an evil socialist apparently I realize that the needs of the many can outweigh the needs of the few or the one. Lots of people still need to believe in a God, it can give purpose, it's comforting, it creates a societal unity (and conflict). I think it's inevitable that religion will wane, but it will be a slow process. You just can't yank the blankey away and not expect a temprer-tantrum.
