Though this reason seems to be lost over time, originally (and I was 21 in 1973), the WTS emphasized that smoking and spiritism were closely connected. As far as I know, they have not yet made that connection with masturbation.

Do, then, persons who have not broken their addiction to tobacco qualify for baptism?

The Scriptural evidence points to the conclusion that they do not. As has been explained in other issues of this magazine, the Greek word phar·ma·ki´a used by Bible writers and translated "practice of spiritism" or "spiritistic practices" has the initial meaning of "druggery." (Gal. 5:20; Rev. 9:21) The term came to refer to spiritistic practices because of the close connection between the use of drugs and spiritism. Tobacco was also used initially by the American Indians in this way. It can properly be placed, therefore, in the category of addictive drugs like those that provided the source for the Greek term phar·ma·ki´a. The nicotine in tobacco does not have the same mental and emotional effects produced by "hard" drugs such as heroin or the so-called psychedelic drugs like LSD; yet nicotine addiction does definitely affect the mind and exercises a strong enslavement.

It is of interest to us that the Greek word used in the Bible for "practice of spiritism," "sorcery" or "witchcraft" is phar·ma·ki´a, which is very closely related to our word "pharmacy." Phar·ma·ki´a means, literally, "druggery." Why is this word used for spiritism or sorcery? One authority says:

"PHARMAKIA . . . (Eng., pharmacy, etc.) primarily signified the use of medicine, drugs, spells; then, poisoning; then, sorcery, . . . See also Rev. 9:21; 18:23. . . . In sorcery, the use of drugs, whether simple or potent, was generally accompanied by incantations and appeals to occult powers, with the provision of various charms, amulets, etc., professedly designed to keep the applicant or patient from the attention and power of demons, but actually to impress the applicant with the mysterious resources and powers of the sorcerer."—Vine’s ExpositoryDictionaryofNewTestamentWords.

Trust the acute intellectuals of the WTS to infer that the consumption of nicotine with the provocation of spiritualism.

What the consumption of alcohol spirits is not. I happen to know many a jws provoking the spirits with this product.

It's funny that the jws search and dig and twist scrptures to expel somokers and masturbaters but are silent on gluttony which is outright mentioned as an expelling "sin".

Just too difficult to prove? god must bless the gluttons

    blondie,

Thanks for the new updates. Well, I was 4years old in 1973. blondie was 21 wow. So blondie is 17 yrs older than me yet she has sharp mind as ever. Its great so see blondie been here so so long a time and now we are both on this site. I can imagine this site as a sort of a magnet, a central pull of attraction for Ex-JWs all of over the world.

As for you Homerovah the Almighty, I can imagine your feelings after seeing so many sisters at Assemblies. If I was an elder, please be assured ,I would not have judged you for masterbating when you went home. Instead, I would have encouraged you to get a sister and settle down and properly use that God-given energy in the way that would please not only you but the sister and God our creator. Personally, I would have looked one for you if possible. You know, elders have a lot of influence over individuals. Many sisters really fear displeasing an elder or else they will be branded as being disrespectful to those taking the lead, 'Jehovah's Holly spirit-apponted ones', you know what I mean.

Aw gee thanks Scott77, would you ? Well actually available right now.

You know I was just thinking about those big horse gluttons that never got counseled.

And regards to smoking how about Pipe smoking where the person does not inhale the smoke

but simply tastes it. I think it was more of one of those personal laws handed out because they didn't want

the smoking image placed on the members in this most holy of holiest religious organizations.

There is always an on going image construction to make the JWS appear different and better than the other religious faiths.

In hindsight you would think they would encourage everyone to masturbate, that way when a stranger they meet at the hall

would wonder how come these people are so darn happy,

  • I quit!
    I quit!

I can see the connection between spiritism and smoking. I know several people who started smoking in their teens and eventually became Jehovah's Witnesses. It's just a stepping stone to worse things.

Good one Lime: "Besides, how many people masturbate with at least two witnesses present?"

The very few that I knew of that confessed to maturbation were... well... wankers.

Besides, nobody can smell masturbation on your clothes or breath. I have wondered about the smile on some of the guys' faces at Bethel though... kinda like... er, my own avatar... ugh.

Maybe the the people in the WT who right the rools jerkoff themselves. If they baned it there would be no more JW.
