Can we blame our ancestors for our own shortcomings?

I'm very late to this discussion too and wonder if I ought to keep out of it. But I have one question as I'm not faimiliar with the case of the NFL player. What I'd like to know is - does the player blame his failings on his ancestral pain or is his ancestral pain being taken on board as a mitigating factor?

    Your black ancestors did that.

    Yes, they did.

With the full knowledge and active participation of White buyers.

    No buyers, no sellers.

I'm from Puerto Rico. Back home I'm considered 'white', but not here in the states. Back home we don't have race issues like we do here. I can call my black friend whatever I want, and talk to any 'black' person (by PR's standards) without being afraid of them being offended or getting violent by any little thing.

THIS IS SO TRUE. Race relations between blacks and whites are so much better in most latin american societies like Puerto Rico, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic. All these countries have a large African fraction, much bigger than here, we wouldn't be what we are without African contributions. The music, the food, even the language. My grandparents use words that are clearly West African and won't show up in a Spanish dictionary. I remember growing up in my community, calling someone "mi negrito" or "mi blancito" was a term of indearment. We hardly even see color compared to here in the US. It is like a cultural disease here. I really hate it.

No sellers, no buyers. Don't shift the blame.

    Minimus..Read Sylvia`s post to me..She agree`s Farkel does have a point..

I see no reason for Black American people not to be proud of how far they have come..

Look what thier frigg`n relatives did to them and what happened to them, when they got where they where going..

They addapted and over came..Thats a lot to be proud of..

No. I've heard no one other than snowbird make this connection.

I think everybody is to blame:

    • The African Sellers, for being greedy bastards. They are now teaching classes to Wall Street bankers.

    • The Lazy European fucks who couldn't get their cotton themselves because their corsets were to tight.

    • The Slaves, for buying the whole '2-Hour Tour' schtick.

    Hi, QL.

Actually, I don't think Mr. Vick has said too much in his defense.

I feel sure his ancestry was taken into consideration by the judicial system.

I know other Black people are doing so.
