is socially acceptable for dating people? Is there a double standard?

This has always been a touchy subject for me. I watched my mother throughout her late thirthies/early forties be unable to get a date while jw men in their forties were marrying twenty year olds. Pisses me off. When I went on witness dating sites, the women usually were open to dating a wide range of ages. The men were willing to date women up to twenty (sometimes thirty) years younger but more than half of them wouldn't even date a woman the same age as them.

As far as socially acceptable goes, that will differ depending on the area you live in and the company you keep. Yes, men are more likely to date (or marry) vastly younger women than the other way around, but I think that's less of a double standard and more of a biologically and culturally ingrained attraction.

For instance, my boyfriend is two years younger than me. Doesn't seem like a big difference, but it does create a few issues for us. I want to have kids around age 30. So does he. One of us is going to be older or younger than we want to be. Imagine if he were more than two years younger than me. Men may prefer to start a family after they've been in the working world for a number of years and had a chance to own house and build some financial security. Women may prefer to start a family while they're still young enough in terms of biology and stamina to raise little kids. You can see why an older man with a younger woman seems like a good match in this regard.

As with everything in life, you have to figure out what is a priority for you, and sacrifice accordingly. But I do think that in circumstances where there is a limited dating pool, it is rotten to take the twenty yearl old and leave the forty year old lonely.

Interesting thoughts canary. I recently met a girl, don't know her age, but I'd put her at 20, and she's extremely smart (tested into Cal III on her ACT and is a mechanical engineering major), funny and on overall nice girl. I've considered asking her out, but I can't get past feeling like a dirty old man (I'm 30).

And get this, she's a gearhead who's building a '78 Cuda for her father and recently redid the entire wiring system in her lifted Jeep.

Can she change your oil? (sorry, you shouldn't set me up with something THAT easy..)

Seriously, age difference is in the eye of the beholder. I have to tell you, to be around a girl that young wouldn't do it for me, but to each their own. She no doubt is pretty smart.

Ha! I see this anytime I go on POF... It is very VERY rare for a man to say he'll date a woman 5 years older, but 10-15 years younger, NO PROBLEM!!! Makes it almost impossible for a woman my age!

Ps, i set the limits at 10 yrs older than me. That's it!!

I think it's that older women are less apt to believe bs.
