Did Jesus ever claim Messiahship?

In her book, Introduction to Christianity, Mary Jo Weaver says this:

"Some Christians think that Jesus was so clearly the Messiah that no one could fail to recognize him as such...... Christians who see Jews as a 'problem' might be surprised to learn that Jesus has been a continual puzzle for the Jews. Medieval Jews tended to picture Jesus as an apostate Jew, a man who had lost his faith; 19th century Jewish scholars had an image of Jesus as a great ethical teacher. They could not agree whether he claimed to be the Messiah or not, though modern scholars agree that Jesus did not make that claim for himself." [Page 33-4] Italics mine.

What's your opinion? If you believe Jesus was the Messiah, can you support it with his words [or what is reported to be his words]?

The JW response would be: "When he publicly read from Isaiah, he was making this very claim."

What about Christians in general? They all believe Jesus to be Messiah. Is the above statement - that he never made such claim - valid to them?

John 4: 25 The woman said, "I don't know about that. I do know that the Messiah is coming. When he arrives, we'll get the whole story."

26 "I am he," said Jesus. "You don't have to wait any longer or look any further."

27 Just then his disciples came back. They were shocked. They couldn't believe he was talking with that kind of a woman. No one said what they were all thinking, but their faces showed it.

28 -30 The woman took the hint and left. In her confusion she left her water pot. Back in the village she told the people, "Come see a man who knew all about the things I did, who knows me inside and out. Do you think this could be the Messiah?" And they went out to see for themselves. MSG

Don't care to look it up. If you believe it to be Jesus' words - then post it for discussion.

Jesus couldn't possibly be the Messiah.

JCanon is the Messiah. Everyone knows that.

In Matthew Jesus askes his disciples who they think he is, Peter answers "the Son of God, the Messiah" and Jesus praises Peter for what he says, saying that God revealed that to him and that on Peter he would found his church.

Mark 14: 60 -61 In the middle of this, the Chief Priest stood up and asked Jesus, "What do you have to say to the accusation?" Jesus was silent. He said nothing.

The Chief Priest tried again, this time asking, "Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed?"

62 Jesus said, "Yes, I am, and you'll see it yourself:

    The Son of Man seated
At the right hand of the Mighty One,
Arriving on the clouds of heaven." MSG

    Thank you SB.

On this meager amount of 'evidence' should I place my faith in Jesus? These words were not recorded until decades after he supposedly spoke them. Could it be that his disciples, now eagerly trying to establish Christianity as the approved way to worship God, just put words in his mouth perhaps? Just a thought.
