    Some names just for you

    Welcome
    to the
    Watchtower Victims Memorial

The Watchtower Victims Memorial is dedicated to the memory of Jehovah's Witnesses and their minor children who died as a result of the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society's organizational decrees banning blood transfusions, organ transplants, skin grafts and vaccinations. To add a name to this memorial please contact us.

Note: The Watchtower Victimes Memorial was originated and hosted by another web site several years ago. We have obtained the files and are updating them as time permits.
    Unknown Victims
THE NAMES listed in this Memorial constitute only a small sampling of the victims who should be included, according to published statistics. Relatively few cases come to the attention of the news media because a police accident report was involved or because doctors asked courts to intervene. When adult JWs are admitted privately to hospitals and sign legal release papers, their deaths due to refusing blood are generally recorded only in confidential patient files. Published obituaries usually omit such details. Names are listed here if reported in the public news media or if submitted by relatives, friends, or other knowledgeable individuals who vouch for the information.

    Why Blood Transfusions Are Refused

The respect for life shown by Jehovah’s Witnesses has also affected their attitude toward blood transfusions. When transfusions of blood became an issue confronting them, TheWatchtower of July 1, 1945, explained at length the Christian view regarding the sanctity of blood. It showed that both animal blood and that of humans were included in the divine prohibition that was made binding on Noah and all his descendants. (Gen. 9:3-6) It pointed out that this requirement was emphasized again in the first century in the command that Christians ‘abstain from blood.’ (Acts 15:28, 29) That same article made it clear from the Scriptures that only sacrificial use of blood has ever been approved by God, and that since the animal sacrifices offered under the Mosaic Law foreshadowed the sacrifice of Christ, disregard for the requirement that Christians ‘abstain from blood’ would be an evidence of gross disrespect for the ransom sacrifice of Jesus Christ. (Lev. 17:11, 12; Heb. 9:11-14, 22) Consistent with that understanding of matters, beginning in 1961 any who ignored the divine requirement, accepted blood transfusions, and manifested an unrepentant attitude were disfellowshipped from the congregations of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Earlier discussions of the sanctity of blood appeared in TheWatchTower of December 15, 1927, as well as TheWatchtower of December 1, 1944, which specifically mentioned blood transfusions.

*** yb75 pp. 222-223 Part 3—United States of America ***The sanctity of blood was highlighted in TheWatchTower of December 15, 1927. Among other things, its article "One Reason for God’s Vengeance" said: "God told Noah that every living creature should be meat unto him; but that he must not eat the blood, because the life is in the blood." Years later, TheWatchtower (December 1, 1944) stated: "Not only as a descendant of Noah, but now also as one bound by God’s law to Israel . . . the stranger was forbidden to eat or drink blood, whether by transfusion or by the mouth. (Gen. 9:4; Lev. 17:10-14)" In succeeding years, matters became even clearer.

    The

Watchtower of July 1, 1945, clarified the Christian position on blood. Among other things, it pointed out that, though blood transfusion dates back to the ancient Egyptians, the earliest reported case was a futile attempt to save the life of Pope Innocent VIII in 1492, an operation that cost the lives of three youths. More significantly, this issue of TheWatchtower showed that God’s law on blood as given to Noah is binding upon all mankind and that Christians are required to abstain from blood. (Acts 15:28, 29) Summarizing, TheWatchtower said:

"Seeing, then, that the Most High and Holy God gave plain instructions as to the disposition of blood, in harmony with his everlasting covenant made with Noah and all his descendants; and seeing that the only use of blood that he authorized in order to furnish life to humankind was the use of it as a propitiation or atonement for sin; and seeing that it was to be done upon his holy altar or at his mercy seat, and not by taking such blood directly into the human body; therefore it behooves all worshipers of Jehovah who seek eternal life in his new world of righteousness to respect the sanctity of blood and to conform themselves to God’s righteous rulings concerning this vital matter."

The Christian’s stand on blood transfusions had now been clearly defined. Samuel Muscariello was confronted with a test of his integrity on this matter. Blosco Muscariello tells us: "Shortly after getting out of prison [where he was confined for his Christian neutrality], my younger brother, Samuel, contracted the kind of strep throat that results in uremic poisoning. The doctors prescribed an operation—with blood transfusions, of course—giving him two years at the most to live without the operation and the blood. Sam walked out on them. This was in the year 1947. . . . Besides the Watchtower statement [one that they had particularly noted], the words of [visiting] Brother Sullivan at the prison kept ringing in our ears . . . ‘the taking of blood is wrong.’ In exactly two years, Sam was taken back to the hospital, dying. Under pressure, I went to his bedside and said, ‘Sam, they want to give you blood.’ Half drugged, half conscious, he tried to get out of bed [to avoid receiving blood, which never was administered to him] . . . our family, though saddened [by his death], was strengthened by Sam’s clear thinking and integrity to Jehovah even until death."

OK, but let's put this back on topic...

I.E. - is it reasonable to say that "literally thousands of JWs are dying each year because they would not take a blood transfusion"...?

One way to look at it would be - how many congregations are there in the U.S.? How many in the world?

Would it be reasonable to say that even one member of every (five, ten, whatever) of these congregations demonstrably died without blood? And, by assumption, that they would have demonstrably LIVED if they had taken blood?

I have a credulity problem with this statement. As probably any non-JW would if presented with it.

I didn't make the statement. Just provided some research. Maybe you could do some or just be credulous.

    In-credulous, Blondie.

Let's be honest. The deal is that I have publicly criticized some of the comments from this source and got publicly ridiculed for it.

This thread plainly illustrates one of the reasons for my criticism.

Then do some research. I'm glad you are such an expert in words. Perhaps that extends to doing research.

Beep - Beep - (JWoods backs up the truck)...

It was not JWoods that said "literally thousands are dying each year for the lack of the I.V. needle..." If I had even posted such a thing, I would be expected to provide some kind of credible evidence. Let alone if I went so public as to provide it to the media as an announcement.

Names provided were so far 84. Which are barely more than the society put up on the cover of that shameful Awake of kids that died without transfusions. While I agree that the anti-blood teaching is not biblical nor moral - I (and others) just questioned the veracity of the numbers in this statement.

I submit that I hardly need to do any "research" to disprove some assertation by someone else which I found to be a little beyond the pale.

(so to speak - "the pale". get it?).

JWoods, actually, this little interlude isn't the point of the thread.

However, I do see your point. It is impossible to know the numbers for sure. I personally think that there are not thousands that die each year.

However, I don't know either way.

I can see that credibility is a factor here. The fact is, one person who dies from this nutty teaching is one too many, esp as we all know, that the Society has gone schytzophrenic on the matter regarding blood fractions.

I think we can all agree that tens of thousands have lost their lives over the decades due to this horrible teaching.
