Welcome NLP, thanks for sharing a snippet of your story - I am sure your story is an interesting one and that you have many gems to share.
A good friend of ours was in a similar position to you - he agreed to meet with the elders and all he had to say on the matter was that he'd made an informed decision not to attend for the time being. He answered no other questions and kept repeating his original reason for his fade. It worked out for him - they stopped pursuing him, mind you his father was a PO in his cong.
I hope things work out for you - if it does all go 'Pete Tong' as others have said - you will survive and you'll be a better person for it. It's not a pleasant thing to go through but it does have its upside.

Welcome NLP!! Your description of grieving was exactly my feelings as well. You will likely progress through all the phases (denial,anger,bargining, depression, and finally acceptance). Glad to hear that you don't have family in. That will be a major help!
The ride will be bumpy but this board is a great place to vent.

Been there, done that.
Not only did we survive, but we are now thriving.
After having little to do with our non-JW family for 25 years, I can say, we are now very close and catching up for lost time.
Be sure and share more of your experience when you can. Many visiting and still to visit can be helped by your comments.
Knowing and positive, it will all turn out for the best.

I didn't bother with that elders meeting. They came by my home and even asked me for a copy of the letter I had written to Bethel. I told them that if Bethel didn't think they were important enough to see that letter, then why should I give them a copy? They hated that I dissed them off that way. Good luck on your exit. Since your family are not JW's, be prepared to eat some humble pie.
