Why do Arabs hate Israel? A brave Lebanese shares her experience . . . and her troubling conclusion.

    Dear Friend of FLAME:

We supporters of Israel and advocates of pluralistic democratic ideals often ask ourselves where the moderate Arabs and Muslims are in the face of the terrorism and racism that seems so dominant in their societies. We wonder: Are there none among them who will stand up to oppose the hate and repression at the heart of radical Islamic values?

This week's FLAME Hotline provides a poignant and powerful answer: Yes, there are a few Arabs and Muslims capable of rising above the racism they are taught from birth and opposing imposition of radical Islamic rule over all other cultures.

One of them is Brigitte Gabriel, a Lebanese-born journalist, author of "They Must Be Stopped," and founder of ACT! for America, a non-profit issues advocacy organization. Some years ago, Gabriel delivered an astounding speech at Duke University, which we've reprinted below. Her brave and heartfelt words almost moved me to tears, and I found myself wishing this piece would "go globally viral"---be read by, well, everyone 'round the world.

    Best Regards,

A Lebanese speaks out about evil in the Arab world and the need to stand up against terror
By Brigitte Gabriel, 2004 Speech at Duke University

I'm proud and honored to stand here today as a Lebanese speaking for Israel, the only democracy in the Middle East. As someone who was raised in an Arabic country, I want to give you a glimpse into the heart of the Arabic world.

I was raised in Lebanon where I was taught that the Jews are evil, Israel is the devil, and the only time we will have peace in the Middle East is when we kill all the Jews and drive them into the sea.

When the Muslims and Palestinians declared jihad on the Christians in 1975, they started massacring the Christians city after city. I ended up living in a bomb shelter underground from age 10 to 17, without electricity, eating grass to live, and crawling under sniper bullets to a spring to get water.

It was Israel who came to help the Christians in Lebanon. My mother was wounded by a Muslim shell and was taken into an Israeli hospital for treatment. When we entered the emergency room, I was shocked at what I saw. There were hundreds of people wounded, Muslims, Palestinians, Lebanese Christians, and Israeli soldiers lying on the floor. The doctors treated everyone according to their injury. They treated my mother before they treated the Israeli soldier lying next to her. They didn't see religion, they didn't see political affiliation; they saw people in need and they helped.

For the first time in my life, I experienced a human quality that I know my culture would not have shown to their enemy. I experienced the values of the Israelis, who were able to love their enemy in their most trying moments. I spent 22 days at that hospital; those days changed my life and the way I believe information, the way I listen to the radio or to television. I realized that I was sold a fabricated lie by my government about the Jews and Israel, which was so far from reality. I knew for a fact that if I were a Jew standing in an Arab hospital, I would be lynched and thrown to the ground as shouts of joy of "Allahu Akbar" (God is great) echoed through the hospital and the surrounding streets.

I became friends with the families of the wounded Israeli soldiers, one in particular—Rina—whose only child was wounded in his eyes. One day, I was visiting with her and the Israeli army band came to play national songs to lift the spirits of the wounded soldiers. As they surrounded his bed playing a song about Jerusalem, Rina and I started crying. I felt out of place and started walking out of the room, and this mother held my hand and pulled me back in without even looking at me. She held me, crying, and said, "It is not your fault." We just stood there, crying, holding each other's hands.

What a contrast between her—a mother looking at her deformed, 19-year-old only child and still able to love me, the enemy—and a Muslim mother who sends her son to blow himself up to smithereens just to kill a few Jews or Christians.

The difference between the Arabic world and Israel is a difference in values and character. It's barbarism versus civilization. It's democracy versus dictatorship. It's goodness versus evil.

Once upon a time, there was a special place in the lowest depths of hell for anyone who would intentionally murder a child. Now, the intentional murder of Israeli children is legitimized as Palestinian "armed struggle." However, once such behavior is legitimized against Israel, it is legitimized everywhere in the world, constrained by nothing more than the subjective belief of people who would wrap themselves in dynamite and nails for the purpose of killing children in the name of god.

Because the Palestinians have been encouraged to believe that murdering innocent Israeli civilians is a legitimate tactic for advancing their cause, the whole world now suffers from a plague of terrorism, from Nairobi to New York, from Moscow to Madrid, from Bali to Beslan.

They blame suicide bombings on the "desperation of occupation." Let me tell you the truth. The first major terror bombing committed by Arabs against the Jewish state occurred 10 weeks before Israel even became independent. On Sunday morning, February 22, 1948, in anticipation of Israel 's independence, a triple truck bomb was detonated by Arab terrorists on Ben Yehuda Street in what was then the Jewish section of Jerusalem. Fifty-four people were killed and hundreds were wounded.

Thus, it is obvious that Arab terrorism is caused not by "desperation" or "occupation," but by the very thought of a Jewish state.

So many times in history in the last 100 years, citizens have stood by and done nothing, allowing evil to prevail. As America stood up against and defeated communism, now it is time to stand up against the terror of religious bigotry and intolerance. It's time for everyone to stand up and support and defend the State of Israel, which is the front line of the war against terrorism.

    Thank you.

Since I know from first hand Muslim religion and mentality I would say some fact: First I do have Muslim friends that I love and we have no problem to live in peace. What I'm worried of is the way that Europe and US are acting and promote Fundamentalism on the one hand, and on the other they tolerate things that they shouldn’t.

In UK there was an issue with Public toilets and the Muslims demand to have special toilets (there is a special hose to wash your as* when you finish) In France they demanded to wear Sharia in the Universities. It created turmoil amongst the French and at the end the Officials didn’t accept it.

Now what if I’m in a Muslim country and I wear a cross? In some it is forbidden. What if a Muslim change religion and becomes Christian? In Persia, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, just to name a few, you will be beheaded if you dare to change your religion. On the other hand the Muslims demand to own their mosques in Christian countries, and I’m glad that in Australian Government didn’t accept some issues that Muslims raised. It was a clear answer: This is a Christian Country, if you don’t like it you can go some place else!!!

We know how women are treaded in those countries. A second class human being without any rights at all, that is subject to her husbands will. At the Court she cannot defend herself, and in cases of rape, it ends to be stoned for fornication, instead of protecting her!!!

There is new wave of Muslim Fundamentalism emerging seriously. Turkey has a plan to become the leading country of the Muslim world. It was published by the Turkish Foreign Minister Davoutoglu, in a book with the title “Strategic Depth”. The plan is to make Turkey a Muslim and I repeat, a Muslim super power in the Islamic World, from China to Bosnia, plus to use the Turkish immigrants who stay in Germany, England, France, on their behalf. They will use their influence to the Muslims all over the World, by building Mosques, Theological Universities and to build an Islamic attitude amongst the people, in order to create their super power.

Is this an ambitious plan? No, I don’t think so. Personally I have seen the destruction of World Wide Heritage Christian sites by the Turks. Christian Churches 1700 years old have turned into stables and public toilets. Cemeteries complete destroyed, broken crosses, the corpses they were removed from the graves and thrown to the dogs. I have seen from first hand systematic destruction of the Christian Heritage in Constantinople, Smyrna, Ephesus, the occupied part of Northern Cyprus by the Turkish Troops since 1974. They are trying to vanish from the face of the earth from the places that they occupied from 1453 A.D any mark that shows a Christian monument or building.

There is a huge increase of Theological Muslim Universities in Turkey in order to create the Islamic mentality and culture and to promote Islamism amongst the Islamic world and in Europe and this means they are following their plan.

In the same book he said that in order to be the leader of the Islamic World they have to cut bonds with the Israel, since it does not look well to the rest of the Islamic World. Indeed this is happening since both countries are in a very bad situation, with the resent events in Gaza, when Israel attacked the ships who were supposed to carry humanitarian help, and most damage was done on the Turkish boat. This event gave bonus to the Turks in front of the eyes of the Arab World. Turkey that fights for the human rights of the Palestinians, forgetting the fact that human rights are violated in Turkey, and specially the human rights of the Greek Orthodox & Assyrians Christians, Armenians, and Kurds. A country that committed genocides and Ethnic cleansing of the groups that just mentioned above for the last 80 years, a country that occupies since 1974 the 37% of Cyprus, a country member of the UN & EU, committed war crimes, created 240,000 refugees in their own land, did ethnic cleansing of the occupied land in order to vanish anything that is not Muslim.

Don’t forget that they provide support to Persia lately with their nuclear program and this is something that many Western countries are taking into consideration.

My question is: Have our Government’s ever protested to this Islamic Countries regarding the human rights and specially the women? No, because they are too busy drilling Oil and making Millions from it

What will happened when Oil finishes? What will happened when Muslims infiltrate Europe, US? Are we are going to be strong enough to tell them: “Listen guys you have to do something about human rights and specially the way you tread women”.

Funny. I was flipping channels this last Sunday and landed on one of those crazy Bible-thumping preachers. He said almost the very same thing as you, JustHuman14, right down to trying to link Turkey to world prophecy.

Then he went on as to how this was fulfillment of Bible prophecy and PROOF that we are in the end times...Turkey is part of Gog of Magog...we must unite with Israel...Turkey getting mad about the Gaza blockade is proof...isn't it amazing how quickly the world scene can change because God is in control...yada yada yada.

For thosel of you who enjoy such drivel: http://rapturealert.blogspot.com/2010/01/turkey-boosts-ties-to-its-gog-magog.html

BTW, the Lebanese woman quote in an earlier post is such an out-there Muslim hater that JEWISH groups have recinded her invitations to speak...hhmmmmm.

The answer is no, and the US would have no moral legitimacy if it DID try to argue human rights, because the US is NOT a signatory to all parts of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

BS. The U.S. has as much right as any country to protest manifest denial or abuse of human rights. It is, in fact, a moral obligation for a world power.

Signing or not signing political documents has nothing to do with it.

Hate to point out the obvious JW, but if we wanted to be a world power leader, we could take the lead in signing and abiding by the Declaration, a political LEGALLY enforceable document, and other treaties. Cough, cough, of course, its legal enforceability is precisely why we will not ratify the document.

Eleanor Roosevelt would sure be proud to see her work finally come to a positive end.

    http://www.hhropenforum.org/2009/08/human-rights-treaties/

The US has a particularly abysmal rate of ratification of international human rights agreements – of the nine core international human rights treaties created by the UN, only three have been ratified. The only treaties ratified by the US since 1994 have been optional protocols prohibiting the use of children in armed conflict and the sale of children and child prostitution. These protocols are additions to the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), which the US has not ratified. Somalia and the US are the only nations in the world that have not ratified the convention, which is the most widely and rapidly ratified human rights treaty in history. The US has also failed to ratify the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), along with only six other countries, including Iran, Somalia, and Sudan.

My post has nothing to do with crazy TV Christian preachers. Don't forget I'm Greek and we have bad experience from Turks. I have only mentioned the facts that I know and I HAVE SEEN regarding Turkey. Personally I don't believe in prophecies

    1517 CE

    1) Martin Luther nails 95 Theses to church door

    2) Marks beginning of Ottoman rule of Palestine

    1917 CE

Balfour Declaration - End of Ottoman rule of Palestine

    1947

UN Declaration of Statehood for Israel

    1517-1947 = 430 years...does that number ring any bells?
